With training camp in full swing, the Philadelphia Eagles' title defense is off and running.
If they are to successfully defend their Lombardi Trophy, the Eagles will need another big year out of Saquon Barkley. But, that's an obvious take. What wasn't on anyone's bingo card is a mostly-unknown running back knocking on the door at training camp: undrafted rookie Montrell Johnson.
Jimmy Kempski of The Philly Voice shared his thoughts on Johnson's past couple of practices:
"We noted in Saturday's practice notes that rookie UDFA Montrell Johnson had an explosive run after a nice jump cut. He had another explosive run today that got the attention of Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts, who both went out of their way to give Johnson kudos after the run."
If we're going off last season's initial roster, Johnson probably doesn't have much of a chance. Philly kept just three running backs after those late-August roster cuts, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for four this year.
A Super Bowl champion team like the Eagles has to keep an open mind. Staying on top of talent and ensuring they have the best players to continue competing at this level is of the utmost importance.
If Johnson keeps going with these explosive runs, they'll continue to add up. And, as a relatively-bigger back at 5-foot-11, 212 pounds, Johnson has added value that the Eagles clearly prioritized this offseason when they signed AJ Dillon.
As much as the Eagles catch flack for not passing the ball as efficiently or even as often as some might like, that only keeps reminding us that they are a running football team. This offense will keep running the football with players who can do it and do it well.
Whether that's Jalen Hurts, Barkley or another back, it doesn't matter. Philadelphia is going to run the football, and if Johnson's buzz keeps growing, there is no reason why he shouldn't be able to compete for the fourth running back spot on the depth chart.
