While Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff hasn't been able to lead the team over the hump to a Super Bowl appearance, we can feel that the team is right on the cusp of doing so. They've dealt with injuries galore over the last few years at inopportune times, and it has really hindered their ability to advance past teams they dominated in the regular season.
Goff is a huge part to that championship puzzle, though, and that cannot be denied. And, it's why one site actually has him tabbed as one of the "worst" contracts in the NFL, and the worst contract held by the Lions. Because he's been unable to land the Lions in a Super Bowl game, he's not living up to the expectations set by a $53 million a year contract.
"Jared Goff has revived his career with the Detroit Lions, but the playoff success just has not been there. Goff is near the top of the QB market with $53 million per year. At some point, the Lions are going to need their franchise QB to put this team on his back and take them on a run," wrote Lou Scataglia of NFL Spin Zone.
Goff has put up some fantastic regular season numbers for the Lions. Last year, he posted 4,629 passing yards and 37 touchdowns, leading an explosive offense to a Divisional Round game against the Commanders (which they lost). However, he's very turnover prone because of how pass-heavy the Lions' offense was under Ben Johnson, and he's been known to fold under pressure against strong opposing defenses.
That's not exactly an inspiring factor in your franchise quarterback, but Goff is still "young" by QB standards. He'll only be 31 by the time the season has already gotten underway, and he had a healthy 2024.
With the retirement of Frank Ragnow, it's hard to see how Goff will be more comfortable behind this offensive line barring a major breakout from one of Graham Glasgow or Tate Ratledge at center. It feels like this year more than any in the Goff era, the team will need to rely on their defense to keep games close while the line works its kinks out.
"If 2025 is yet another year where Detroit falls short in the postseason, what does that say about Goff? The former LA Rams QB needs to show more on the field. The regular season stats are great, but that only goes so far," added Scataglia on Goff's paper tiger-esque success.
With their core still set in Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, and Jameson Williams, it feels like Goff is once again set up for success, offensive line questions aside. Let's see if that regular season success can translate into a deep postseason run, though.
