Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has had shining reviews of Jack Campbell's time in training camp so far this offseason.

Campbell, now entering his third year in the NFL and third with the Lions, is a linebacker with major potential within this Lions defense. He keeps making lists for predicted most improved defenders for the 2025 season, and that's for good reason.

The physical and handsy defender is a threat to any passing game headed into this year, and it seems like Detroit will need to rely on him a bit more headed into Week 1 as we wait for a resolution to the Alex Anzalone contract extension issue.

"This is his defense. He’s taken ownership and sets the tone for everybody," said Campbell during an interview with SiriusXM.

This is pretty high praise considering the personnel on the Lions' defense - longer tenured veterans like D.J. Reed, Kerby Joseph, Derrick Barnes, and Anzalone all still occupy the roster. But, Campbell clearly sees some major development from Campbell that has set himself up as the leader of the unit alongside DC Kelvin Sheppard.

Campbell earns major approval in training camp

Campbell, the player, recently reacted to that praise from his head coach during training camp on Friday: "When I came back, we talked individually and he let me know. It means a lot. I can take pride in that. But, it's not gonna change who I am and who I've been, stepping foot here since my rookie year. I'm not gonna change who I man. It's an honor, but it also takes 10 other guys on the field," said Campbell to reporter Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit.

Campbell was named to PFF's top 32 linebackers list ahead of the 2025 season, landing all the way at number eight on the list.

"Campbell took a massive step forward in his second season as a pro, with his 78.7 PFF overall grade ranking fourth in the NFL among linebackers with at least 600 snaps. While he’s always been a plus run defender, it was his massive leap in coverage that earned him his placement on this list...Another step forward in 2025 will put him in the top-five conversation," wrote Mason Cameron.

Campbell made this list over players like Anzalone, even, which shows just how much potential he has headed into the year. With health, this Lions defense can contend with even the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC - and that all begins with Campbell's availability.
