After pulling some magic tricks in Week 1 on his way to nearly 300 yards passing and two total touchdowns, Michael Penix Jr. put together a much quieter Week 2 performance against the Vikings on Sunday Night Football.
Penix completed just 13-of-21 passes for 135 yards and did not throw a touchdown. It was one of the more inaccurate games of his young career, but the Falcons still managed to win by double digits in a hostile road environment because of two things. Atlanta’s defense put together its best all-around showing in years, and Penix never put the ball in harm’s way.
Penix’s ability to protect the football very well might be his best trait today. He’s only thrown three interceptions through five games, and if you dig a little deeper, even a couple of those weren’t his fault. Against the Giants last season in his first NFL start, Kyle Pitts dropped what should have been a touchdown pass, and the ball deflected for an interception. The following week, Penix threw an interception that was the result of the receiver running the wrong route.
Those plays happen throughout the season, but as far as actual turnover worthy plays, Penix has been among the best at keeping those to a minimum, especially this season. Through two games, he’s the only quarterback not to record a turnover worthy play, according to Pro Football Focus.
Michael Penix Jr. is the only NFL QB who has played two full games and has yet to commit a turnover worthy play, per Pro Football Focus charting.

Avoiding turnovers is probably the single biggest issue most young quarterbacks face, and Penix has been up against some stiff tests to start the season. Todd Bowles and Brian Flores usually get the best of inexperienced signal callers.
The Falcons are hoping Michael Penix Jr. will eventually turn into one of the league’s premier quarterbacks. That’s going to take some time, but as long as he’s protecting the football, Atlanta should win a lot of games.
