The Kansas City Chiefs finally got into the win column on Sunday night, and after a miserable start to the season, it was a better effort from the running back room. Overall, the Chiefs received decent outings from Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt. Both rushers tallied 10 carries each against the New York Giants. Nonetheless, there were still some moments where Kansas City was missing some juice on their run attempts.
Kansas City has never shied away from adding some talent in the midst of a season. The Chiefs are generally going to look for any sort of productive addition, if possible, under general manager Brett Veach. Could running back be the spot where Kansas City attacks before the trade deadline?
The Kansas City Chiefs could still use some more juice at the running back spot—and obvious trade candidates are sitting there.
If so, some teams are offering prime chances to perhaps pry some talent from their offense. No team is already eliminated from playoff contention after three weeks, though it is looking extremely bleak for a few teams that possess some electric playmakers at running back.
There are three running back trade candidates that stand out for a team like the Chiefs. All three have elements in their repertoire that could give K.C. a boost. Plus, speculation of these players changing teams has followed all of them in the past to a degree. And right now, all three find themselves on an 0-3 squad as September gets closer to ending.
Let's start with the oldest player of the trio of running backs on 0-3 teams. Alvin Kamara, the longtime New Orleans Saint, has not only seen his team start winless, but the Saints gave up 44 points on Sunday, including 38 of those coming in the first half. Kamara finished with 56 total yards on a combined 19 touches.
The main element that Alvin Kamara would add to the Chiefs' offense is his diversity. He is a dual threat as both a runner and pass catcher. In the pass game, Kamara has been sure-handed on screens and in the quick game, which are areas Kansas City likes to utilize. And even this deep into his career, the quickness of Kamara is still evident enough. He just feels destined to join some sort of contender soon.
Next up, we will look at the New York Jets. The Jets made it interesting against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, yet New York finds itself at 0-3 after some up-and-down moments early in the year. Breece Hall is going to be a fascinating case to monitor among the running backs.
Hall has seemingly been followed by trade speculation for parts of the last couple of years. If he were to come to the Chiefs, it would be a homecoming for him. The Jets' running back played his high school football in Wichita, Kansas. Hall has exciting straight-line speed. But at the same time, he is not afraid to run through defenders when going in between the tackles. The Chiefs could be consistently effective in short-yardage situations or in tight games by having someone with Hall's skill set.
Finally, we have to look at the Miami Dolphins. Plenty of depressing headlines have already materialized surrounding the Dolphins after their 0-3 start. De'Von Achane is one of many burners on the Miami offense. Early in the season, however, he is the one who has continuously produced.
Achane is another dual threat, similar to Kamara. The pass-catching element of his game is as diverse and multiple as any potential running back that Kansas City may be looking to acquire. In the run game, the Chiefs could get a boost in their run play calls by adding someone like Achane, too. Misdirection and creativity just seem so easy to design if Achane were to be involved in K.C.
There is no guarantee that any of these running backs will be moved. But with all of the Saints, Jets, and Dolphins starting 0-3, there is already an early eye on the future for those collective franchises. None of those teams may be looking to offload in a major way. But if their respective team trends continue, the Chiefs may be a team to entice them to take some assets in exchange for a player. Kansas City would hope to reinforce an area of weakness as a result.
