Many believe the New York Giants had their best NFL Draft in two decades. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but its importance cannot be overstated.
The 2025 class must emerge as an overall success. Otherwise, the current regime is in serious trouble, and the franchise is headed for more dark days. The incoming rookies are inspiring tons of confidence, however, as they get set to aid in the Giants' ongoing restoration project.
ESPN's Matt Miller recognized three New York players when constructing his list of the top 100 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.
His criteria, which goes beyond just ranking the best prospects, consisted of "value (where a player was drafted vs. where he was ranked predraft), scheme fit, how the selection addressed a need, what the prospect brings on the field and whether additional assets were gained or lost in draft-day trades to acquire him."
Miller ranked pass-rusher Abdul Carter at No. 8, quarterback Jaxson Dart at No. 36, and right tackle Marcus Mbow at No. 85. All three rookies can potentially serve vital roles on this team in the long term.
Abdul Carter could be the top player in his class
Although analysts and fans considered all scenarios, the former Penn State star was the logical choice to land on the Giants at the No. 3 overall selection.
Carter bursts off the edge with striking explosiveness, boasting a profusion of natural talent. Miller loves his ability and thinks New York is the perfect place to grow and develop.
"Having my top-ranked player 'fall' to No. 3 actually represents great value, but Carter is also a great fit in a Giants defense that has established stars in defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II and edge rusher Brian Burns," Miller said.
"Carter doesn't have to carry the defense right away and can be used the way the Cowboys used Micah Parsons as a rookie. He'll play some linebacker, rush the passer, and be a defensive chess piece."
The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year's versatility is what could ultimately define his impact. His obvious appeal lies in the stellar 22.6 pass-rush win rate and 12 sacks he posted last season, but Carter could also help New York clog rushing lanes. Pro Football Focus gave him a respectable 78.2 run defense grade.
Although the 21-year-old is still searching for a number to wear on the Giants, he is positioned well to evolve into a true defensive cornerstone at the NFL level.
The organization's other 2025 first-round pick is much more of a wild card, at least on paper, but he is also in a good situation.
Giants put their faith in another Ole Miss QB
While some analysts and pundits thought that general manager Joe Schoen reached for Jaxson Dart by trading the No. 34 overall selection and two third-rounders to the Houston Texans, Miller applauds the Big Blue brass for moving up to No. 25 to get their guy.
When a team believes it has a possible franchise quarterback, it makes sense to take him in the first round and acquire the fifth-year option in his rookie contract. Schoen did exactly that, appointing the First-Team All-SEC selection as the future starting signal-caller.
With arm strength, accuracy, mobility, and experience, Dart has much to offer head coach Brian Daboll and the Giants. He helped the Ole Miss Rebels earn consecutive 10-win campaigns for the first time in 64 years.
Despite his accolades and impressive numbers, including 11,970 passing yards, 81 passing touchdowns, and 1,541 rushing yards during his college career, the 21-year-old has plenty to learn about playing quarterback in the NFL.
If he can transition from RPO-heavy Ole Miss to the Giants' more flexible system, Jaxson Dart could become an effective starting QB for New York.
He has the luxury of sitting behind veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to begin his career, a positive that surely contributed to his No. 36 ranking on ESPN's list.
The Giants jumped up to grab Dart, but on Day 3, they watched another prospect fall right into their laps.
Marcus Mbow provides the O-Line depth this team has been lacking
The former Purdue offensive lineman rounds out the trio of Giants rookies in the top-100 rankings, bringing him athleticism and upside that is typically unattainable at pick No. 154.
"Mbow was a value win, as the Giants selected him in Round 5 even though he had a third-round grade as a developmental prospect," Miller writes. "Mbow could even be the team's long-term answer at right tackle."
He should specifically benefit New York's rushing attack, as illustrated by the 78.7 run-block grade he tallied with the Boilermakers in 2024.
The 22-year-old logged 658 snaps at right tackle last season, but he also has experience playing on the interior O-Line. While it is unclear where he will play for the Giants, Mbow should carry crucial responsibilities.
Injuries decimated an initially capable wall of protection last year, so his arrival is especially important. Joe Schoen is now properly preparing for the worst-case scenario, giving the team a much better chance at decisively improving in the trenches, at long last.
If Abdul Carter, Jaxson Dart, and Marcus Mbow all provide the contributions Miller anticipates, this Giants draft class will be on its way to leaving its mark in the history books. The real work begins now.

SEATTLE, Wash.—The Las Vegas Raiders returned Pete Carroll to the Pacific Northwest at beautiful Lumen Field tonight, but it wasn’t the outcome the future Hall of Fame head coach desired. The Raiders completed their first preseason game of the year with a 23-23 tie. It was a typical first preseason game for both teams in which they looked sloppy, made plenty of mistakes, but also gave their respective fan bases some things to cheer about. Pete Carroll was encouraged by his team competing to the very end. The Good Rookie quarterback Cam Miller had an impressive performance as he transitions from FCS to the NFL. Although it's worth noting that he wasn't facing the Seattle Seahawks' starting lineup, or even most of their second team, Miller completed six of seven passes for 76 yards and threw one touchdown, achieving an outstanding rating of 151.5. How big is the transition from FCS to the NFL? He mentioned in the locker room that he had never needed to use a silent snap count in college. Isaiah Pola-Mao (IPM), the emerging star, made a terrific interception early in the game against a strong group of Seahawks players. I believed that when he arrived as an undrafted free agent, he would need some time to develop, but that he had the potential to play at this level. So far, he has done nothing to change that opinion. I think he is a year away from reaching his full potential, but I expect him to become a Pro Bowl-caliber starter by 2026. Thomas Booker, a third-year defensive tackle from Stanford, delivered his best performance of the preseason tonight. He showcased impressive motor and mobility, making a strong statement on the field. He ended the game with four tackles but played a significant role in several other plays as well. The phrase "Can’t keep a good man down" perfectly describes sophomore running back Dylan Laube's journey. At the start of camp, there was speculation that if rookie Tommy Mellott could successfully transition to the role, Laube might be left behind. However, Laube has stepped up impressively, excelling on special teams and delivering a remarkable performance on offense. He recorded four rushes for 31 yards, one catch for six yards, and scored one touchdown. The Bad Wide receiver Alex Bachman has had one of the best preseasons of anyone on the team, earning a spot on the 53-man roster. However, a non-contact injury late in the first half raised concerns. During the game, he recorded two catches for 36 yards, but another impressive catch that gained significant yardage was nullified by a penalty committed by rookie offensive tackle Charles Grant. Carroll said afterward, when I asked about Bachman, that he had been hurt earlier in camp, but did return. The Ugly Aidan O’Connell, in the first half, had a challenging performance. He underthrew a deep ball intended for an open Dont’e Thornton, leading to an interception. Later, he was baited into making another poor throw, resulting in his second turnover of the game. Describing O'Connell's performance in the first half as disappointing would be an understatement; it was nothing short of ugly. He was 9/18, for 114 yards and had an abysmal rating of 30.6 to end the first half. Credit the Raiders and AOC. I didn't think they would keep AOC in to start the 2nd half. They did, and he immediately rewarded them with a TD drive, culminating in a TD pass to Dylan Laube—an enormous confidence builder for AOC. He finished the night 18/30, for 205 yards. Jaydon Blue injury update: Major news emerges on Cowboys RB after Thursday practice exit
According to Nick Harris of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue suffered a bone bruise in his heel on Thursday. Blue was stepped on during practice, initially looking at an ankle sprain. Thankfully, the MRI came back with some positive news. “Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue’s MRI revealed a bone bruise in his heel after it was stepped on in today’s practice, according to a @startelegram source,” Harris said via X. “No ankle sprain. Good news for the young back who has emerged as an offensive playmaker in camp.” Blue previously told Harris that an ankle injury was what he suffered. Questions about the running back’s availability for Saturday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams are now present. Something to watch as kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT from SoFi Stadium. Dallas took Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, hoping to address its running back situation. Blue played his college ball inside the Lone Star State, suiting up for the Texas Longhorns. Plenty of guys at the position have come out of Austin and found quick success. Blue is hoping to be the next one. For now, there is an injury for him to deal with. No exact timeline has been provided per a report or by a team official. Hopefully, Blue is able to get things cleared up quickly and get his first taste of the NFL before Sept. 4’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. More on Jaydon Blue, Cowboys running back situation Running back was a position the Cowboys needed to desperately figure out this offseason. Rico Dowdle, the team’s leading rusher, was no longer on the roster. Behind Dowdle, Dallas did not have much else. A nice mix of veteran presence and youngsters was needed. Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders provide the former, while Blue was a part of the draft class alongside Phil Mafah. A combination of those four figures to be on the opening night roster. Exactly how head coach Brian Schottenheimer splits up the carries is not yet known. Blue’s injury certainly does not help the situation. Cowboys players, in general, have been going down throughout training camp thus far. Making sure everyone is healthy will be critical heading into the season. Especially an explosive back like Blue, someone who can change the outcome of any game in just the snap of your fingers.
Five NBA coaches starting 2025-26 season on hot seat
When an NBA team is struggling, it can change the players or the coach. With free agency all but done, rosters are set — so it's the men on the sidelines who are most vulnerable. Here are five NBA coaches who will start the season on the hot seat. 1. Willie Green, New Orleans Pelicans Green is in a precarious position entering his fifth season with the Pelicans. His team took on future salary to add Jordan Poole from the Washington Wizards in June, a win-now move, but also added two lottery picks in Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen. They traded next year's first-round pick to get Queen, so they expect to make the playoffs. Still, the team's success depends on the health of Zion Williamson, who has missed a combined 199 games over the last four seasons. Green's short leash is partly because his new bosses, Joe Dumars and Troy Weaver, didn't hire him. With Queen already injured, Green will be an easy scapegoat if the Pelicans struggle to start the season. 2. Nick Nurse, Philadelphia 76ers Nurse is in his third season with the 76ers, where he had a first-round loss in 2024 and a miserable 24-58 record last season. Now the Sixers are hoping for better health for the entire roster, from big man Joel Embiid to last summer's big free-agent signing, Paul George, as well as a return for second-year guard Jared McCain. But there's no reason to expect Embiid and George to improve their health when they're a year older and have had more surgeries. With Embiid, George and Tyrese Maxey all on long-term maximum contracts, Philly doesn't have a lot of simple fixes — except on the sidelines. 3. J.J. Redick, Los Angeles Lakers The Lakers were a very different team when they hired J.J. Redick to be their head coach, fresh off his gig hosting a podcast with their franchise player, LeBron James. Now, James has only one year left on his contract, while Luka Doncic signed a maximum extension. Redick led the Lakers to the third-best record in the Western Conference, but made questionable moves in the playoffs, like using only five players in the second half of a loss. His job security depends on whether Doncic likes playing for him. If not, the team that fired Frank Vogel two years after he won a title and axed Darvin Ham after two seasons won't hesitate to cut ties with Redick. 4. David Adelman, Denver Nuggets Adelman performed remarkably after taking over the Nuggets with three games to go in the regular season. He led Denver to a seven-game victory in the first round before falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the next round. The Nuggets gave him the permanent job in May. The shadow looming over Denver is that three-time MVP Nikola Jokic declined an extension this summer. If the Nuggets think keeping Adelman will help them re-sign Jokic next summer, he's in good shape. If not, Michael Malone can tell Adelman that Denver won't think twice about making a change. 5. Doc Rivers, Milwaukee Bucks The Bucks were forced to retool after Damian Lillard's Achilles tear, losing Brook Lopez and adding center Myles Turner. There's uncertainty about how the new team will do, or whether superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo wants to stay with the Bucks. With two first-round series losses as Bucks coach so far, Rivers could be done in Milwaukee, especially if his best player wants out, too.
