The Atlanta Falcons have finally chosen to clean house after yet another disappointing season.
Still, given their improved pass rush and their plethora of offensive talent, they should have one of the most coveted head-coaching positions in the NFL. With that in mind, we'll take a look at three candidates Falcons owner Arthur Blank should strongly consider for the job.
Sean McVay already has his very own head-coaching tree in the league. The Los Angeles Rams coaching staff is the gift that just keeps on giving, and McVay has given Chris Shula, his defensive coordinator, the nod as a great future head coach.
Despite their youth and some moving pieces, the Rams rank No. 10 in points allowed per game (20.4) with a 36.3 percent third-down conversion rate, the seventh best in the league. Shula has been instrumental in developing some of their young pieces.
If the Falcons want to move on from a defensive-minded head coach, then they could go after another one of McVay's assistants. Mike LaFleur, like his brother Matt, has also spent time with Kyle Shanahan and has been a quick riser in the coaching ranks.
He's got ties to the organization after being an assistant coach in Atlanta in 2015 and 2016. Under LaFleur's tutelage, the Rams had the No. 1 offense in the league in terms of points per game (30.5) and EPA per play. Sean McVay calls the plays, but LaFleur is the architect.
Klint Kubiak, another former Kyle Shanahan assistant, is also expected to be one of the most sought-after head-coaching candidates this offseason, and the Falcons should be all over him right now. Under his guidance, the Seattle Seahawks put up 28.4 points per game, the third most in the league.
The 38-year-old has made Derek Carr and Sam Darnold look good and has put together strong passing games in consecutive seasons with two different teams. The Falcons have way too much talent to work with on offense, and we've already seen what hiring the right guy for the job did for struggling teams like the Chicago Bears.
