Three hottest seats on the Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are in football paradise after winning their third Super Bowl in five years. They also kept their core intact, re-signing free-agent Pro Bowl defensive tackle Chris Jones to a five-year, $158.7M deal.

However, no team has ever three-peated in the Super Bowl era, and Kansas City's roster has flaws, which could lead to changes. With that in mind, here are the Chiefs on the hottest seats in 2024.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney

Before the start of the season, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes told Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press that Toney could become "one of the best receivers in this league." The former first-round pick, however, fell far short of Mahomes' expectations. 

In 13 games in 2023, Toney had 27 receptions for 169 yards, one TD catch and five drops. He didn't play in another game following a Week 15 loss to the New England Patriots — a game in which he bobbled a pass that was intercepted — and was a healthy scratch in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Chiefs recently signed WR Marquise "Hollywood" Brown to a one-year, $7M deal. Don't be surprised if Toney's playing time dwindles or the Chiefs move on from him. The 25-year-old is in the final year of his rookie contract.

Offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor

In 2023, Taylor signed a four-year, $80M deal, but he flopped in his first season in Kansas City. Per Pro Football Focus, he led the league in penalties (20 in 17 games) and posted a below-average 51.6 grade. 

His poor play is one reason the Chiefs struggled to protect Mahomes. According to Pro Football Reference, they allowed the fourth-most pressures in the league (164) last season.

Taylor's play must improve next season, or he could be a cap casualty in 2025. The Chiefs will save $20M if they release him with a post-June 1 designation next offseason. 

Wide receiver Skyy Moore

Moore failed to break out last season. In 14 games, the 23-year-old had 21 receptions for 244 yards and one TD catch. Kansas City needed more from the former second-round pick.

Kansas City has focused on upgrading its receiving corps this offseason, which led the league in drops (44) in 2023. The Chiefs recently released WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and it wouldn't be a surprise if they bring in competition for Moore.

In his latest mock draft, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. had the Chiefs taking Texas wideout Adonai Mitchell with the 32nd overall pick. If they take a WR in the first round, it could signal that Moore's days in Kansas City are numbered.
