Three hottest seats on Washington Commanders

After finishing last in the NFC East for the second straight year, Washington hopes new head coach Dan Quinn can turn things around. Luckily, the team has plenty of room under the salary cap to make necessary changes.

With that in mind, here are three Commanders on the hottest seats in 2024.

Right tackle Andrew Wylie

The team had high hopes for the two-time Super Bowl champion when they signed him to a three-year, $24M contract last spring, but the former Chief failed to impress in 2023. Wylie allowed nine sacks last season, fourth most at his position per Pro Football Focus.

Washington’s offensive line allowed a league-high 85 sacks last season and with a league-best $96M in cap space, the team can afford to upgrade its offensive line. Wylie carries a $9M cap hit for 2024 but the team can save $4.2M with his release.

Wide Receiver Dyami Brown

Brown will only cost the team $1.5M next year but with so many talented receivers available in the draft and fellow receivers like Jamison Crowder and Curtis Samuel reaching free agency, the team could easily absorb $238,909 in dead cap money and move on.

Washington drafted Brown 82nd-overall in a 2021 draft class that included Ja’Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. Unlike those players, Brown hasn’t met expectations with just 476 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons.

Quarterback Sam Howell

If the Commanders draft a quarterback as expected with the second-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Howell could be too valuable to keep on the bench. In his first year as a starter, Howell led the league with 612 attempts and finished as the NFL’s 12th-leading passer with 3,946 yards.

Could that make him a trade target for a quarterback needy franchise?

Teams without early first-round picks could have interest in a 23-year-old player like Howell.

If the Commanders do bring in a young quarterback, they might want an established veteran on hand to show him the ropes. Last year it was Jacoby Brissett, but he’s a free agent with New England reportedly showing real interest. But if Washington wants to hand the keys to a player like LSU’s Jayden Daniels or North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Howell might become expendable.
