Three Key Philadelphia Eagles Matchups in 2024
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Last season, the Philadelphia Eagles finished with an 11-6 record and second place in the NFC East. They were a favorite to win the NFC East, Conference Championship, and even Super Bowl. After losing Super Bowl 57 to the Kansas City Chiefs by only three points, the 2023-2024 season was looking positive for the Eagles.

Going into their Week 13 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, the Eagles were 10-1, losing to only the New York Jets at this time. This matchup was marked as the game of the year not only for the players and coaches but for the fans and television broadcasts as well. It was the rematch of the Conference Championship game from the 2022-2023 season. Just like the NFC Championship game from the previous postseason, this game was one-sided. The 49ers would go on to win 42-19. This was the start of the Eagles’ downfall.

The Eagles would go on to lose five out of their last six games after losing to the 49ers. But they would still clinch an NFC wildcard road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in which they would lose 32-9, ending their 2023-2024 season and running for a second Super Bowl.

With the 2024-2025 season right around the corner, it’s a fresh start for every NFL team. A new season to look forward to too. And expectations are running high for all the NFL teams on their quest to capture the Lombardi Trophy. Here are three key matchups for the Eagles this season.

Key Philadelphia Eagles Matchups In 2024

Dallas Cowboys

In 2023, the Dallas Cowboys finished with a 12-5 record, winning the NFC East, and hosted a playoff game against the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round of the NFC playoffs. Unfortunately for them, the Cowboys would fall short in the playoffs, losing by the score of 48-32. The Cowboys, this offseason, have not been making a lot of noise when it comes to free agency. They signed linebacker Eric Kendricks and also brought back a familiar face to the franchise, running back, Ezekiel Elliott, to fill their void at the position after losing Tony Pollard.

Even though the Cowboys did very little in the off-season and have a lot of decisions to make when it comes to some players’ contracts, they will still be in the race for the NFC East and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Eagles will play the Cowboys in Week 10 and Week 17.

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers in 2023 were the youngest team in the NFL. After trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, their first-round draft pick in 2020 quarterback Jordan Love would become the starter. Love had a rough start to the 2023 season. But after their Week 15 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they would go on to win their final three games and clinch a playoff spot. The Packers went on to beat the Cowboys in the first round of the playoffs by the score of 48-32 but lost in the divisional round to the 49ers, 24-21.

During the offseason, the Packers made a few key moves, especially in their offensive backfield. They released running back Aaron Jones and signed former Las Vegas Raiders running back, Josh Jacobs. They also re-signed AJ Dillion to back up Jacobs. The Eagles will play the Packers in Week 1 on Friday, September 6 in Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons had a rough season in 2023. Football fans would say the NFC South, as a whole, had a rough season. But for the Falcons, it was a rollercoaster of a year. Going into Week 15, they were still alive in the NFC playoff hunt. But after losing to the Carolina Panthers by the score of 9-7, that would seal their chances of clinching the NFC South and a playoff berth. The Falcons would lose two of their last three games, finishing the season with a 7-10 record.

The Falcons went into this offseason with one main position focus: the Quarterback. And, on the day free agency opened, they moved quickly by signing veteran Kirk Cousins. They also drafted quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the first round, mentioning that they are planning for now and the future. By completing their roster by filling the quarterback position, they are one of the most put-together teams and are looking forward to winning the NFC South, clinching a playoff berth, and bringing a Lombardi Trophy to the city of Atlanta. The Eagles play the Falcons in Week 2 this season.
