Three must-watch players in Steelers' second preseason game

The Steelers host the Bills in their second preseason action of the 2023 season on Saturday night. Here are three must-watch players for Pittsburgh.

Kenny Pickett, quarterback

Pickett and the Steelers' starting offense only played one series in their first preseason action, but they looked good as he threw for 70 yards and a touchdown and had six completions to four different receivers. Now it's time to see if they can be consistently good against better competition.

Pittsburgh played its starters last week, but the Buccaneers didn't. That isn't the case this week as head coach Sean McDermott announced that QB Josh Allen and the rest of Buffalo's starters will play about "a quarter and a half." Head coach Mike Tomlin said the first-team offense will "play more" as well.

Joey Porter Jr., cornerback

Porter Jr. was held out of the Steelers' first preseason game due to injury, but his long-awaited debut is finally here. The team selected him with pick No. 32, which it acquired in the Chase Claypool trade, bringing him home to play for his dad's old team.

The last time a Porter played for Pittsburgh it worked out pretty well. Joey Porter, who played linebacker for Pittsburgh for eight seasons (1999-2006), helped the franchise win Super Bowl XL. Fans are hoping Porter Jr. can do the same and begin to show he's the future at the position on Saturday.

Keeanu Benton, defensive tackle

Benton, the Steelers' second second-round pick, looked great in his first preseason action by quickly shutting down one of Tampa Bay's drives with a tackle for a loss on a fourth and one. However, he left the game with an ankle injury.

If he plays, which he seems on track to do, he will have a great opportunity to make his case to start this year. Tomlin has already ruled out DT Larry Ogunjobi, which means Benton will be bumped up against better competition. If the Wisconsin product continues to dominate in the trenches, Pittsburgh won't be able to keep him off the field.
