Three post-waiver fantasy quarterbacks for Week 2

In fantasy football, the early bird gets the worm. Eager managers should find some "wiggle room" for these NFL passers who are still buried on the waiver wire after one week of play (fantasy stats via Yahoo Sports).

Joe Flacco | Cleveland Browns

Flacco can still sling it, even at 40 years old. His 45 attempts in a 17-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday were the fourth most of any quarterback, and his 290 passing yards were more than double that of Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

He also spread 31 completions among eight different receivers, including rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. and rookie running back Dylan Sampson, who led the team with eight catches. Flacco received 14.20 fantasy points for his efforts, but could have something extra for the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

Flacco joined the Ravens as a first-round pick in 2008 and led the team to victory in Super Bowl XLVII, where he was named MVP. The team let him go in 2019, but he remains its all-time leading passer with 38,245 yards.

Baltimore gave up a league-high 394 passing yards and 38.76 fantasy points to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen in Week 1 after allowing the second-most passing yards per game (244.1) last season. The Browns are not the Bills, and Flacco is no Allen, but after rushing for only 46 yards against Cincinnati, Cleveland should give Flacco as many passes as he can handle in Week 2. Flacco remains available in 95 percent of leagues.

Aaron Rodgers | Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh’s new passer silenced his critics by leading the league with four touchdown passes against his old New York Jets team on Sunday, shocking those who believed the 41-year-old quarterback had little left. Rodgers completed 22 of 30 passes without an interception and finished with 25.66 fantasy points, the seventh most among quarterbacks. Of course, the six quarterbacks above him gained points by running the football, while Rodgers had one carry for -1 yards.

Still, Rodgers looked good, averaging 8.1 yards per attempt while throwing to wide receivers Calvin Austin III and DK Metcalf, who combined to make eight catches for 153 yards against New York. This week, he’ll face a Seattle Seahawks defense that allowed 384 total yards to the 49ers in Week 1, the eighth most in the league. He’ll also face them at Acrisure Stadium (formerly Heinz Field), where Steelers fans will be eager to watch the four-time NFL MVP. Rodgers remains available in 74 percent of leagues.

Geno Smith | Las Vegas Raiders

By passing for 362 yards against the New England Patriots in Week 1, Smith passed Dan Pastorini (317 yards) for the most yards in a Raiders debut. He also outperformed Patriots quarterback Drake Maye (30-of-46, 287 yards) in a 20-13 win at Gillette Stadium.

He finished last week with 18.48 fantasy points, 0.3 fewer points than San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who is rostered in 94 percent of leagues. Purdy is doubtful for Sunday’s game with a shoulder and toe injury suffered against Smith’s old Seahawks team.

Smith finished 2024 with 281.0 fantasy points, the 13th most among quarterbacks. Purdy owners could do worse than adding Smith to their lineup. The Raiders QB remains available in 75 percent of leagues.
