The New England Patriots overhauled their coaching staff and roster this offseason.
The Pats hired head coach and former player Mike Vrabel, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Terrell Williams. They also signed wide receiver Stefon Diggs, defensive tackle Milton Williams and cornerback Carlton Davis III.
New England's recent additions, combined with other factors, may produce the best season the team has had in several years.
Here's why the 2025 Patriots could win the AFC East:
Diggs, quarterback Drake Maye and running back Rhamondre Stevenson are New England's key playmakers.
Rookie left tackle Will Campbell, who excelled in the preseason, and guard Michael Onwenu, the team's ever-reliable interior blocker, will lead the offensive line.
The last time New England had an offensive unit this promising was the 2019 season, when Brady was under center and head coach Bill Belichick was calling plays.
If Maye and McDaniels complement each other well, the offense will be unrecognizable from 2024 (31st in yards, 30th in points per game).
When McDaniels was the coordinator in 2021 and then-rookie QB Mac Jones was the QB, Jones threw for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions en route to their last playoff appearance.
If that was McDaniels' level of success with Jones, a weak-armed, barely mobile QB, then his excellence with Maye, who is athletic and rocket-armed, will be even better.

However, there are viable concerns.
McDaniels struggled as Las Vegas' head coach in 2022 and 2023 (9-16 record), possibly signaling that he won't unlock the offense's full potential. As a rookie, Campbell may falter under the pressure of the regular season. Even Maye, who consistently played well in his rookie season, could struggle to adapt to the new offensive system.
These are issues to consider, but there is no denying that the 2025 Patriots' offense offers upside that has not been seen in years.
According to ESPN, the Patriots' 2025 schedule is the third-easiest in the NFL.
Ten of New England's games are against teams that were under .500 in 2024, and four of those ten will be against the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, New England's division rivals.
If New England capitalizes on their easier matchups, especially against New York and Miami, the AFC East will be in reach.
And if they manage to win against their more challenging opponents, like the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons or Tampa Bay Buccaneers, things will be even easier.
In a surprising move, the Patriots cut ties with safety Jabrill Peppers on Aug. 29. One of the team's better safeties, he had 60 total tackles (40 combined, 20 solo), a forced fumble and an interception in 2024.
Even without Peppers, though, New England's secondary is strong.
Opposite Davis — a more-than-solid defender — is third-year CB Christian Gonzalez, the team's 2023 first-round selection. Another CB who will frequent the field is Marcus Jones, whose athleticism led him to earn First-Team All-Pro honors at punt returner.
Gonzalez and Jones have been working in tandem since 2023 and have done a respectable job. Adding Davis to the mix will bring more positives, and, combined with the pressure brought by pass rushers Christian Barmore and Williams, the defense will flourish.
