The Bears end their preseason with a 24-15 victory Saturday night over the Tennessee Titans. There were many positives for the Bears in this game. Here are my three takeaways from the Bears’ huge victory over the Titans.
The Bears selected WR Zavion Thomas in the third round, and many were scratching their heads wondering why the Bears took a receiver who was projected to go in the seventh round. Many were asking what Ben Johnson saw in this playmaker who many scouts viewed as undersized and with sloppy hands.
Well, those people can put all the criticism to rest, as the rookie in the first play of the game had a 97-yard receiving touchdown from backup quarterback Tyson Bagent. Thomas went on to catch all five of his targets, recording 140 receiving yards.
Not only is Thomas a capable wide receiver, but he flashed some of that speed and athleticism in the return game, having a nice 40-yard punt return showcasing that he can be a reliable returner, something the Bears haven’t had in years. Thomas truly cemented himself onto the 53-man roster with a stellar performance.
Rookie defensive tackle Jordan Van Den Berg was selected in the sixth round from Georgia Tech. Van DenBerg has really been looking like a steal so far this draft, and many are now wondering why Van Den Berg slipped so far down. It seemed that every time Van Den Berg is on the field, he is involved and getting in the backfield, pressuring the quarterback.
In the game against the Titans, he almost recorded his first career sack but did help cause a fumble, which was recovered by the Titans’ offense. Van Den Berg could be the anchor the Bears desperately need for a weak defensive line group. He has certainly made the regular season roster.
The Bears starter will obviously be Caleb Williams, as he looks to have another leap in his young NFL career entering year three. But don’t forget about the Bears backup Tyson Bagent, who has been excellent as the backup for the Bears.
Against the Titans, Bagent recorded just one incompletion as he went 16/17 with over 200 passing yards on the day. Another reason why it is always nice to have a great backup quarterback up your sleeve.
