Titans captain Cam Ward unapologetic in leadership approach, ‘…I don’t care’

Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward has been handed the keys.

No, not so much in a literal sense, but the proverbial one.

The Titans made him the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, essentially putting their future in his hands following a stellar collegiate career that saw his status continuously rise across stints with Incarnate Word, Washington State, and Miami.

It’s a wonderful story of perseverance, which resulted in another honor being bestowed prior to his rookie season.

Cam Ward named captain during rookie season with Tennessee Titans

Ward was named captain on Wednesday.

The Titans chose seven men to serve in the role alongside Ward in 2025 — wide receiver Calvin Ridley, safety Amani Hooker, defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, running back Tony Pollard, linebacker Cody Barton, and long snapper Morgan Cox.

Ward and Simmons were involved in a practice altercation during training camp, but evidently that wasn’t a deterrent in both being named captain.

It’s rare for a rookie to earn that distinction, but being the starting quarterback combined with his one-of-a-kind leadership style was enough to get it done.

Titans’ Cam Ward says he doesn’t care how he’s perceived as a leader

Ward has always been rather outspoken and is rather comfortable rubbing people the wrong way — as shared during his appearance on Bussin’ With The Boys on Wednesday.

“I’ve just always felt that I’ll always say what’s on my mind — no matter how it comes across in any given moment,” Ward said. “I just — I’m going to say how I feel. If it touches you a different way than it touched me, I could give — I don’t care.”

Ward believes his upbringing is partly to thank, as well as his desire to show the world how talented he truly is.

“I was put on this earth for one thing, and that’s to play football,” Ward said. “I’m very good at it, and I believe in showing my skillset and letting everything else take care of itself.”

Ward — who saw limited action across three preseason contests — will have an opportunity to show up and show out Week 1 against the Denver Broncos.
