The Tennessee Titans are headed west this weekend in search of their first win of the year against the Arizona Cardinals. QB Kylar Murray’s squad has won a pair of games against lesser opponents by less than one score, and lost to a pair of arguably greater divisional opponents by one score or less also. In a way, that’s someone of a summary of the Murray Era Cardinals.
And yet, the Titans head to the desert as roughly 9 point underdogs depending on the book. That’s because they’ve been blown out by divisional rivals two weeks in a row, and people are beginning to wonder if this team is unraveling.
One thing that’s broken in their favor and could keep the unraveling at bay in Week 5 is the Cardinals run offense they’ll now be facing after a key injury.
The Cardinals starting running back is James Connor, who accounted for 95 yards and a touchdown in Arizona's offense this year before going on Injured Reserve. His backup is second-year back Trey Benson, who put up 160 yards before being placed on IR himself this week.

Cardinals Head Coach Jonathan Gannon announced Benson wouldn't be available for at least the next month at his presser this week, and the local media asked him about the new plan at running back now that they're down their top two guys. “I don't know," Gannon said. "We'll see how kind of the week goes, but we obviously know we have to pick up that role. (I) feel good about ‘Bam’ (RB Zonovan Knight) and Emari (Demarcado) and Mike Carter. I'm sure all three of them will play.”
Demarcado has been a short-yardage back for the Cardinals so far this season, and he's who has the next best production in that running back room. But that's an extremely low bar, as he's only carried the ball 4 times for 8 yards. He's been out-gained on the ground by gadget WR Greg Dortch (9 yards) and QB Kyler Murray, who is second on the team in rushing with 148 yards through the first month of the season.
That's the good news/bad news of the situation for Tennessee. The good news is that Demarcado, Carter, and/or Knight don't present a particularly scary threat on the ground this week. The Titans defense sure could use a light week defending the run, since they currently are allowing 141.5 yards per game on the ground. That's good for fifth-worst in the league through September. Tackling in the second half in particular has been pretty brutal at times. So this should be a good break for them in Week 5.
But it might just mean that Kyler Murray takes the run game into his own hands. If he does, I'm not convinced it will go well for Tennessee. Under DC Dennard Wilson and Head Coach Brian Callahan, they've been a pretty bad unit against mobile quarterbacks. They haven't really dealt with anybody who has given them a hard time in that department this season, but when the most mobile guy you face in September is Bo Nix, you don't get a "Most Improved" trophy just yet. This weekend will be by far their biggest test in that element of the game. Tennessee cannot allow Murray to make up for a weak run game on his own.
