According to multiple reports, there appears to be mutual interest in a future marriage involving three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt and the Cleveland Browns this offseason.
The Tennessee Titans may have something to say about that.
Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Titans general manager Jon Robinson said during a Tuesday video conference that his club has reached out to the 31-year-old free agent.
"We’ve had some contact," Robinson explained. "It’s early in the stages. We obviously know his skill set and what he’s meant to the Texans, having played against him twice [a year] and the type of player he is. So we’ll just kind of see how it goes like a lot of these guys that are becoming available over the next few weeks, see kind of where their interest is, and make a determination if it’s an avenue that we went to go down and are we a fit, potentially, for some of these guys that become available."
As Simmons wrote, Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel worked with Watt while employed by the Houston Texans. Vrabel served as Houston linebackers coach from 2014-2016 and as defensive coordinator for the 2017 season.
According to ESPN stats, the Titans finished this past regular season 28th overall in yards allowed (398.3 per game) and 24th in points surrendered per contest (27.4). As noted by Spotrac, however, the Browns would likely win a bidding war with the Titans for Watt's services if his decision ultimately came down to the money he'll earn off of what will probably be his final big NFL contract.
