NASHVILLE -- The Tennessee Titans made sweeping changes to their offensive coaching staff along with adding some new faces on the defensive coaching staff. The first, and biggest change we saw was Tim Kelly being elevated to offensive coordinator, but that was far from the only change that took place.
On offense, the Titans added former Falcons’ quarterback coach Charles London to the staff who will serve as the Titans’ new quarterback coach and double as the passing game coordinator, a role left open by Kelly’s promotion. This also means that the Titans’ former quarterback coach Pat O’Hara will no longer be in that role and has been re-assigned to the role of pass game analyst.
Continuing with new assignments, Tony Dews, who had been the Titans’ running backs coach has been moved to a role as tight ends coach. At the time of this article being written, the running back coach role has not been filled.
We saw another promotion as well with one of the major openings on the Titans’ staff, offensive line coach. Vrabel has chosen to elevate assistant offensive line coach Jason Houghtaling to the role left open by the firing of former offensive line coach Keith Carter. This will be a very important role as the Titans will most likely have a lot of new offensive linemen on the team in 2023.
To round out the offensive changes, the Titans have re-assigned former tight end coach Luke Steckel to the role of run game analyst. Steckel was interviewed for the Chargers’ offensive coordinator position earlier this offseason in what can only be categorized as a surprising turn of events. Looks like Steckel will remain with the Titans, but it may not be for much longer if he is drawing that sort of attention around the league.
Finally, the Titans made a few additions on the defensive side of the ball as well that had already been discussed publicly. First, Chris Harris was officially brought on as the Titans' defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator. Harris was reportedly hired by the Titans weeks ago, but was still holding out hope for a shot at being a defensive coordinator. Harris even was requested by the Houston Texans to interview for their defensive coordinator spot, but based on this news from the Titans, Harris must have declined.
Finally, the Titans also brought on two quality control coaches on defense including Justin Hamilton and Lori Locust. Locust being the first female coach in franchise history.
