Titans part ways with OC Todd Downing, other assistants after missing playoffs

The Tennessee Titans were eliminated from the playoffs via Saturday's 20-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and completed some house cleaning on Monday.

Per Jim Wyatt of the Titans' website, Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel informed offensive coordinator Todd Downing, offensive line coach Keith Carter, secondary coach Anthony Midget and offensive skill assistant Erik Frazier they won't be retained past a disappointing season that the club finished at 7-10.

"I want to thank Todd, Keith, Anthony and Erik for their service and commitment to our team over their time here in Tennessee," Vrabel said in a statement shared by the Titans. "Each of them made an impact on our organization, were dedicated to the process and loyal members of our coaching staff."

It was suggested last January that Downing could become a scapegoat after the Titans failed to win a playoff game as the AFC's No. 1 seed, falling to the Cincinnati Bengals 19-16. Vrabel voiced his support for Downing at that time, but the coordinator was in headlines for a much different reason in November after he was arrested for driving under the influence and speeding following a Thursday night win at the Green Bay Packers.

Vrabel nevertheless stuck with Downing through the end of the season. As Myles Simmons mentioned for Pro Football Talk, the league hasn't yet announced any discipline for Downing regarding the arrest.

Downing was initially promoted to the role of Tennessee offensive coordinator in 2021 after he spent two seasons as the team's tight ends coach. According to ESPN stats, the Titans ended the regular season ranked 30th with an average of 296.8 offensive yards per game and 28th in scoring with an average of 17.5 points per contest.
