Titans rookie QB Malik Willis on preseason debut: 'I should have done better'

While nine-year NFL veteran Ryan Tannehill still occupies the Tennessee Titans' starting spot under-center, his successor may be waiting in the wings.

On Thursday, the Titans opened their preseason schedule against the Baltimore Ravens.

As is customary, Tannehill, the starter, didn't take any reps in the team's first preseason tilt. So, rookie signal-caller Malik Willis made the start for the Titans.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder made an impressive NFL debut, turning heads with his arm and legs. Willis finished the evening 6-for-11 for 107 passing yards while rushing five times for 38 yards, including a seven-yard scramble for a touchdown in the second quarter.

Despite flashing some tantalizing skills, Willis told reporters he had much to learn after his first on-field NFL experience.

"I should have done better," Willis said Thursday via NFL.com. "Like I said, it's a learning experience and you have to take it for what it is. It's preseason, but it's an opportunity at the same time, so I'm just going to try and continue to work and watch through the film and just keep on going."

Willis' versatility excites the Titans, but the 23-year-old seemingly needs to know when and how to use it to his advantage.

Head coach Mike Vrabel was slightly critical of Willis' indecisiveness throwing at times.

"He needs to try to throw the ball when guys are open, be more decisive," Vrabel said. "We'll evaluate that, see if there's a timing issue or what's going on. Wanted to get him out here, see how he responds. There were some good plays and obviously some plays we're gonna have to look at the timing on the release and if we're making the right decision."

The Titans selected Willis in the third round (No.86 overall) of this year's NFL draft out of Liberty.

In his final collegiate season, Willis completed 61.1 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,857 yards with 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Willis also rushed for 878 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry, while posting 13 rushing touchdowns.
