The Tennessee Titans have been surprisingly active this offseason in year one of the Mike Borgonzi experience. In his first go at being a general manager, the longtime Kansas City Chiefs executive has been more aggressive than expected, and there are some concerns about how the team is spending its money.
Tennessee let one of their best pass catchers, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, walk in free agency on a cheap contract to the Miami Dolphins which left the wide receiver room quite thin. However, Fox Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported on Wednesday morning that the team reached an agreement with veteran wide receiver Van Jefferson on a one-year deal worth up to $2.5 million.
Jefferson is a Brentwood, Tennessee native, so this is a homecoming for the five-year veteran. His father, Shawn Jefferson, was also the wide receivers coach for the Titans from 2013 to 2015 under Mike Munchak, Ken Whisenhunt and Mike Mularkey.
Last season for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Van Jefferson totaled 24 catches for 276 yards and two touchdowns. His best season was in 2021 with the Los Angeles Rams, where he caught 50 balls for 802 yards and six touchdowns, helping lead the team to a Super Bowl win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
He will attempt to fill the void left by Westbrook-Ikhine this season under head coach Brian Callahan. While the team is likely not done adding pass catchers to this group, Van Jefferson is a sure-handed veteran who can help out whatever quarterback is under center.
