Titans updated salary cap space & how to spend it after L’Jarius Sneed trade
Denny Simmons / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK

Entering the 2024 offseason, the Tennessee Titans had the second most cap space in the NFL with nearly $70 million. Therefore, Tennessee had more financially flexibility to add players and improve it's roster.

Over the last few weeks, the Titans have swung big with additions of WR Calvin Ridley, C Lloyd Cushenberry, RB Tony Pollard, and most recently CB L’Jarius Sneed.

But the Titans might not be done. Here’s a look at the Titans’ remaining cap space after the big trade for L’Jarius Sneed and how Tennessee can spend it.

Sneed's contract extension

After acquiring Sneed from the Kansas City Chiefs, the Titans and Sneed agreed to terms on a four-year, $76 million contract extension.

Sneed was originally set play on the franchise tag in 2024 with a fully-guaranteed $19.8 million salary. But after the new deal, Sneed's cap hit in 2024 will be just $9.96 million. Here's the full breakdown of the deal, via overthecap.com.

L'Jarius Sneed Cap Hits

2024 - $9.96 million

2025 - $24 million

2026 - $21 million

2027 - $21.4 million

That leaves Tennessee with $24.71 million in remaining effective cap space. That’s the fourth most in the NFL behind the Eagles, Commanders, and Patriots.

Titans remaining needs

There’s still a lot the Titans could do with their remaining budget. But I’d like to see them focus on adding a safety before anything else.

I still think Tennessee needs a starting free safety, and given the number of talented safeties still on the open market, I think they should have no trouble finding one in their price range. Call up Justin Simmons, Marcus Maye, or Quandre Diggs and add the final piece to the secondary.

Ran Carthon told Titans media on Tuesday morning that the safety is still something he plans on looking at. It’s a market that Carthon predicts will pick up after the 2024 NFL Draft. So it’s possible that the Titans are focusing all of their efforts on the draft for now, but could circle back to add a veteran safety at a later date. Sign me up for that.

Inside linebacker is another position I can’t get over. The Titans need to find a green dot inside linebacker that can be the communicator of the defense. Carthon said on Tuesday morning that the green dot didn’t necessarily have to be an inside linebacker, but I'd still prefer the Titans to find a veteran LB that excels in coverage with green dot experience. Maybe Amani Hooker ends up being the communicator. Fine by me. But the Titans are thin at inside linebacker and need to make an addition through free agency or the draft.

Then there’s the whole offensive tackle situation. Can the Titans find a starting LT and RT in the draft? It’s possible. But I’d still like to see them add a high-upside veteran like Mekhi Becton before the season. Charles Leno Jr. or Andrus Peat would also be good options to compete for a job in training camp.

Adding weapons around Will Levis is awesome, but you’ve also got to protect him and there’s still a lot of talent in the open market.
