Todd Bowles Gives Injury Update On 2 Bucs Rookies
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

There were two injuries of note for the Bucs that understandably caught the attention of fans and media alike during their preseason game against the Steelers. The first occurred before the game even began, coming as a major surprise while the other was even more worrisome considering the type of game this player was having.

Many had to do a double take looking at the Bucs game day inactives when undrafted rookie wide receiver Rakim Jarrett was on the list mixed in with many veteran starters. Jarrett has been having a great training camp to this point, but every rookie, especially one battling for a spot on the depth chart between four and six, needs to prove it in the game as well.

Todd Bowles revealed why Jarrett did not dress.

Bowles Updates Status Of Bucs WR Rakim Jarrett

“He has a sore leg,” Bowles said.  “So we decided to keep him out.”

Does that mean he’s out for a very important week coming up when the Bucs have joint training camp practices against the Jets?

“I’ll see how he’s feeling,” Bowles said without giving much away.  “We will evaluate this week.”

Jarrett’s absence was a disappointment but it did open the door for other Bucs receivers to get a crack at making a statement. Trey Palmer sure did by making a tremendous touchdown catch on a throw from Baker Mayfield that Palmer was able to corral and stay in bounds all at once. Palmer also tied for the team lead with four receptions.

David Moore did as well leading the team with 66 receiving yards on four catches. Deven Thompkins made many defenders miss while Kaylon Geiger racked up 50 yards of receiving as well. It was a strong start for a steep competition.

What Happened To YaYa Diaby?

The other injury that came up was from Bucs outside linebacker YaYa Diaby. Half way through the second quarter Diaby got looked at by trainers on the field after a play for an ankle injury. He walked to the sideline and did not return. Luckily, it looked to be no issue as Diaby eventually was seen running on the sideline with trainers looking on.

On the Bucs broadcast on News Channel 8 WFLA, a camera was on Diaby signing autographs for fans in the stands once the game was over. Typically a good sign that a player isn’t injured. Bowles confirmed that Diaby could’ve went back in but they felt he had enough snaps as it is.

“He’s fine,” Bowles said. “He could have [gone] back in, but it was his time to come out, so we just left him out.”

Diaby calmed the nerves of anybody that was worried after the game as well.

“Just a little twist,” Diaby said. “It isn’t anything too big. [I’m] just going to get in the training room tomorrow and then I’ll be good for the next game.”

Much like Palmer being unavailable, Diaby exiting gave opportunity for players at a position that Bowles recently called the toughest to decide on. Cam Gill made most of it by recording 1.5 sacks, making his presence felt. Markees Watts had a big play at the end by knocking the ball out of the hands of Steelers quarterback Tanner Morgan for a strip-sack.

Although there were several plays in the game that the Bucs would like to have back, they relatively came out unscathed before the much anticipated joint practices coming up this week.
