Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles delivered an emotional tribute to franchise legend Lavonte David following his retirement on Tuesday. The linebacker’s exit brought an end to one of the most decorated careers in the history of the franchise.
In a statement released by the Buccaneers, Bowles spoke from the heart, emphasizing David's huge impact on the team on and off the field. His words outlined the importance of the veteran linebacker and the void to be left on the team.
“Before I came to the Buccaneers, I always had immense respect for Lavonte as a special football player,” Bowles said. “Having had the fortune to coach him for the last seven seasons, I have also experienced the special person and leader he is.
“He has been the heart and soul of our defense and a Super Bowl champion on the way to being an eventual Hall of Famer. There isn’t anyone more respected by his teammates, and that respect extends to his peers and opposing coaches throughout the league. I, as well as everyone in this organization, will miss him tremendously.”
Bowles' message reflected the deep respect Lavonte David commanded in the Buccaneers’ locker room during his 14-year tenure. The two worked together in Tampa Bay for seven years, after the coach joined as a defensive coordinator in 2019.
David concluded his NFL career with a Super Bowl win and three All-Pro honors, making the first team once and the second team twice. In his 215 games for the Bucs, he recorded 1,716 tackles, 177 tackles for loss, 79 QB hits and 73 passes defended.
He also hauled in 33 forced fumbles, 21 fumble recoveries, 14 interceptions and 42.5 sacks. This ranks him among the four players in NFL history to record at least 40 career sacks, 30 forced fumbles and 10 interceptions, joining Julius Peppers, Mo Lewis and Greg Lloyd.
