Tom Brady is bringing a familiar face into a position with the Las Vegas Raiders.
According to The Athletic’s Tashan Reed, the Raiders have hired Alex Guerrero in the official capacity of ‘wellness coordinator.’
Guerrero has worked closely with Tom Brady since 2005, when he was hired by the quarterback to be his body coach. In that time, Guerrero became friends and eventually business partners with Brady, with the two collaborating to create the TB12 wellness brand in 2013. When Brady became minority owner of the Raiders in October, Guerrero became a prime candidate to join their staff.
“I was fortunate and blessed to work with Tom Brady for so many years. And just through the years, we’ve always talked about if we ever had the opportunity to kind of do it at the team level, that we would love to do that,” Guerrero said in a phone interview last week, per Reed. “It was offered to me to be able to do what I’ve been doing for the last 30-plus years, and to be able to bring it and do some of it here at the Raiders.”
While Guerrero’s title does not make his full list of responsibilities clear, one of the primary focuses of his work is to prevent non-contact, soft tissue injuries.
So far, Guerrero has been successful in that regard. The Raiders have avoided any non-contact injuries so far this season, which is promising. The only two serious injuries the Raiders have had were caused by contact: safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. (broken fibula) and quarterback Aidan O’Connell (wrist fracture).
“This is to compliment Alex Guerrero, Chris Cortez, and our entire athletic training staff,” Raiders general manager John Spytek said Wednesday. “We were very, very healthy.”
While Guerrero certainly has his critics, no one will have any complaints if the Raiders can avoid critical injuries like the ones they endured last season.
