Patrick Mahomes is more of a veteran than a young kid nowadays. However, the brilliance and creativity of his game still possess a youthfulness that has shined throughout all eight of his professional seasons.
Sometimes a generational player of his caliber draws the scorn of generations past threatened by that ability. Instead, Mahomes has mostly earned that respect, aided by the three Super Bowls he already has to his name.
One of those past greats, Tom Brady, does not hide his appreciation for Mahomes. In fact, Brady broke the bank in the debut episode of Card Shopping by Complex, spending $75,000 on a Mahomes rookie card.
What he had to say about the quarterback made that purchase less of a shocker.
“If [Mahomes] does break the records, and even last year they had a chance to go for a three-peat, I would have been so happy to be there to watch it,” Brady said during the video."
Brady and Mahomes have done battle at the grandest stage in football when Brady's Tampa Bay Buccaneers bested Mahomes 31-9 in Super Bowl LV.
“When you accomplish a lot, and I was very fortunate to do that, you have people that are doing incredible things, and I always think we should talk about those things, how remarkable they really are.
"Because that's really what's inspiring about it. You want other people to always see what you're doing. You set a certain bar and then they go after it.”
Mahomes may not publicly declare he is chasing the legend, but fans and critics will continue to use that measuring stick until he retires. That may be a tad unfair, but the extraordinary heights of his early career have him in the conversation with the game's best.
He and the Chiefs may have fallen short of the anticipated "three-peat" of a year ago, but Mahomes will be driven to reclaim their crown this season and chase after Super Bowl No. 4.
