Early in the offseason, Tom Brady appeared to be heavily involved with what the Las Vegas Raiders were doing. He had his hands in the decision to hire Pete Carroll as head coach and John Spytek as general manager.
Since those two were hired, he's been notably absent outside of a brief attempt to recruit Matthew Stafford to Las Vegas. That's not an accident.
Brady wasn't in the Raiders' draft room and hasn't been part of any press conferences introducing new coaches or players. That doesn't mean he is not committed to the franchise and heavily involved in big decisions.
According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, Brady knows that he can be a distraction and wants to avoid creating problems for Spytek or Carroll.
"As I understand it, Brady’s cognizant of how his mere presence can take the oxygen out of whatever room he’s in," Breer wrote. "So to empower Carroll and GM John Spytek, whom Brady was with in Tampa, he’s tried to make himself physically scarce, staying back in South Florida where he and two of his three children reside."
Though he's not in Las Vegas often, that doesn't mean he's not still involved. Carroll has said that he talks to Brady often.
Spytek and Brady go back over two decades, so they are likely in consistent communication, as well. Brady's biggest job was helping the Raiders find a general manager, head coach and quarterback.
Now that they have all three, it's less important to have the legendary quarterback involved in day-to-day operations. That said, he'll remain a resource for the team going forward.
