Peyton Manning and Tom Brady were fierce rivals on the field, make no mistake about it. That being said, they have nothing but respect for each other off it.
On Wednesday, the NFL community learned that Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay passed away at the age of 65. This news left countless coaches, fans and players stunned.
"We are devastated to announce our beloved Owner & CEO, Jim Irsay, passed away peacefully in his sleep this afternoon," the Colts said in a statement. "Jim's dedication and passion for the Indianapolis Colts in addition to his generosity, commitment to the community, and most importantly, his love for his family were unsurpassed."
Manning, who was drafted by the Colts in Irsay's second year as the owner, is understandably heartbroken by this development.
"I am heartbroken to hear about Jim Irsay’s passing," Manning wrote on Instagram on Wednesday night. "He was an incredibly generous and passionate owner and I will always be indebted to him for giving me my start in the NFL. His love for the Colts and the city of Indy was unmatched. His impact on the players who played for him will not be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone in the Colts community. He will be missed. Jim, rest in peace my friend."
Immediately after Manning posted that heartfelt tribute on social media, Brady replied, "RIP."
Brady wasn't the only person who offered kind thoughts to Manning.
"Legendary. RIP," ESPN's Adam Schefter said.
"Jim Irsay gave Peyton Manning his biggest opportunity in his career to prove himself in Indy, and then another for the greatest comeback story in Denver," one person commented. "RIP Jim."
"Sorry for your loss, Peyton. He loved you and his Colts," another person wrote.
Manning will always be remembered as the greatest draft pick Irsay ever made as the owner of the Colts.
During their run together in Indianapolis, Irsay and Manning captured a Super Bowl title. That's a memory the latter will never forget.
Our thoughts are with Irsay's loved ones.
