The Kansas City Chiefs’ start to the 2025 season has been uneven and revealing. After entering the year with Super Bowl expectations and a veteran core built around Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs sit a game above .500 with a 5–4 record and trail in the AFC West.

Kansas City’s unit totals and situational numbers show stress points. The offense ranks among the top passing attacks, but has struggled to convert consistently on third down and has allowed pressure that has resulted in Mahomes getting sacked 17 times.

Up next, the Chiefs face Denver Broncos. They head into Sunday in a markedly different posture. The Broncos are flying high at 8-2 after a seven-game winning streak, a run that has vaulted them to the top tier of the conference. The streak has not been built on Bo Nix's play alone.

Denver’s defense has been the driving factor, ranking third in points allowed and sacks while frequently forcing opponents into third-and-long. Statistically the Broncos have limited yards and points and generated a pass rush that produced a high sack total through 10 games.

But even Nix agrees that the offense itsn't doing well. “Yeah, we've got to do better,” he said after Thursday's close win. “At some point 10 points ain't going to be enough. We've got to score more. ... We've got to find some juice somewhere.”

If Denver’s front can disrupt Mahomes’ timing, the game tilts toward the Broncos. If Kansas City’s protection holds and its receivers win contested snaps, the Chiefs regain the upper hand. Even Tom Brady agrees.

“Defense is back, baby! This offense is scaring me a little bit, but it's hard to ignore a seven-game winning streak in the NFL," he said. "Sean Payton is getting the job done, and he has a chance to make a statement against the Chiefs at home on Sunday.”

Sunday's matchup will test the mettle of the best in AFC West. If Kansas City can protect and strike efficiently, the narrative about Denver’s streak will be tested.
