Tommy DeVito's Status in Doubt for Thanksgiving

The second rendition of the Tommy DeVito era may have lasted a single game.

DeVito got the start in the New York Giants’ 30-7 Week 12 loss to the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After the game, head coach Brian Daboll confirmed that, if healthy , DeVito would start on Thanksgiving against the Dallas Cowboys.

As it turns out, that “if” was rather consequential.

DeVito will not travel with the team to Dallas. He’ll arrive later on Wednesday after undergoing further evaluation for a right forearm injury.

Offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor and defensive tackle Armon Watts were both already ruled out for the Week 13 contest and will presumably spend the holiday at home.

DeVito, listed as questionable, doesn’t seem like a safe bet to play on Thursday. He spoke about being sore on Tuesday and wasn’t expected to throw until Wednesday. After the news of his delayed arrival, Jordan Raanan reported the quarterback was a "long shot" to play.

New York will likely start Drew Lock in his place.

Lock was graceful in his handling of the Daniel Jones situation and took the DeVito promotion in stride, despite his frustration. Now, with the nation watching, he could have the opportunity to show out against a bad Cowboys defense.

If nothing else, this likely makes the Giants a little more formidable and fun to watch. Lock, for better or worse, is going to let it rip and should boast the highest average depth of target in the quarterback room. That’s not necessarily a recipe for success, but after Jones’ struggles and DeVito’s lifeless 2024 debut, the bar is incredibly low.

It isn’t yet clear how committed the Giants would be to Lock down the stretch, but if the offense looks competent and New York ends its six-game losing streak, Daboll would have a hard time returning to DeVito.

Thursday’s action kicks off at 4:30 p.m. (ET) on Fox.
