Tony Romo’s CBS fate is revealed after OWI arrest
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

The Tony Romo era at CBS Sports is now a thing of the past.

In a statement released by CBS on Friday, the network announced that it has “mutually agreed to part ways” with the former Dallas Cowboys star quarterback.

“We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward,” the statement read.

The 46-year-old Romo found himself in trouble with the law on July 23, when he was arrested in Milwaukee County, Wisc., for driving while intoxicated. He was booked and later released by police.

In August, the four-time Pro Bowler pleaded no contest to an OWI charge.

CBS put Romo on leave following his arrest, with former Houston Texans superstar pass rusher JJ Watt filling in for him in the booth alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

Watt will continue working with Nantz and Wolfson, according to CBS.

Romo also released a statement following his breakup with CBS.

“I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years,” Romo said. “I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life — with a desire to win and be the best that I can be.”

While Romo’s future in the sports media industry is uncertain, he said that he plans to “take a break” to focus on his well-being and personal life.
