Week 9 was rough for the Detroit Lions. They lost a rivalry game at home, falling to the Minnesota Vikings 27-24. However, Detroit is still 5-3, and has the opportunity to get even better at the NFL trade deadline. With trades being permitted until Tuesday, November 4, at 4 pm ET, the league could get real chaotic up until that point.
The Lions, who are a good team with a few weaknesses to address, should certainly have their eyes on a few players ahead of the deadline. Unfortunately for Detroit, one player that it was likely targeting is probably no longer available. That player is Seattle Seahawks corner Riq Woolen. The defensive back is still in Seattle, and the Seahawks now have a reason to make sure that remains the case.
Woolen, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie, was once expected to be a key defensive piece in Seattle. However, in the years since his breakout season, he has had some inconsistent play, and has been jumped on the depth chart by other Seahawks corners. With the current season being the final year on his rookie contract, Woolen has all the makings of a trade candidate.
That's why Seattle has reportedly received calls for the corner, and why it seemed like he could be moved to a team like Detroit ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. This season, though, injuries have resulted in Woolen playing much more than the Seahawks anticipated. Just when it seemed like the Seattle secondary was healthy, the group sustained another injury, with Josh Jobe leaving Sunday’s game with a concussion.
The injuries have made Woolen a very valuable depth piece for the Seahawks, so it’s fair to assume they may not be motivated to trade him. Seattle is 6-2 after a huge Sunday Night Football win, so the franchise is shaping up to be a contender. That means the Seahawks need quality depth players, like Woolen, who can help them out in a long season.
Unfortunately for the Lions, who are also believed to be a contender, they also need some depth in the secondary, but they will now have to look elsewhere for trade candidates at corner.
