Trade Candidate: Daron Payne

Daron Payne received the franchise tag in 2023 before signing a long-term Commanders extension. The veteran defensive tackle has spent his entire career in Washington, but that may change soon.

Payne has been identified as a potential trade candidate by ESPN’s Dan Graziano and The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones. Plenty of time remains for Washington to avoid a seller’s stance ahead of the November 10 deadline. If the 1-3-1 team continues to struggle over the coming weeks, however, Payne could increasingly become a name to watch.

A full-time starter throughout his tenure in the nation’s capital, Payne has remained a key presence along the defensive interior so far in 2026. The former first-rounder has logged a snap share of 72% to date. Losing him would certainly deal a blow, but uncertainty over Payne’s financial future will be a factor in this case. His current pact – a four-year, $90MM contract – is set to void in February.

As a pending free agent, Payne is one of many rental options to be explored by contending teams. The 29-year-old represents Washington’s largest cap charge for 2026, owing to the team’s offseason stance regarding an extension. It became clear in March general manager Adam Peters and Co. would not explore another contract until after the current season finishes. With a departure on the open market looming, Washington could entertain trade offers over the coming weeks.

Payne recorded 11.5 sacks in 2022, earning the lone Pro Bowl nod of his career along the way. The Alabama product has not come close to matching that figure since, but he has remained consistent as a disruptive presence against the run. He would offer a boost to an acquiring team, especially if he were tasked with handling a rotational role instead of operating as a three-down presence down the stretch.

The final year of Payne’s deal carries a base salary of $16.4MM. In the event of a trade, his new team would only be responsible for paying the prorated remainder of that figure. Especially if the Commanders were to wait another week or two, the list of realistic suitors could grow as a result. It will be interesting to see how Peters approaches the deadline if the Commanders find themselves out of realistic playoff contention given the market which could exist in Payne’s case.
