Trade Pitch Has Raiders Land 42-Game Starter at CB for Day 3 Draft Pick

The Las Vegas Raiders are just booting up training camp, and there are a lot of eyes on the cornerback room. The team decided to embrace youth at the position, but that's a risky proposition.

However, the young players have been playing well in training camp. Regardless, the Raiders may want to consider adding more veteran help. ESPN pitched an idea that would get Las Vegas a longtime starter.

Is Greg Newsome II the Answer for Raiders?

The Raiders don't seem keen on adding a big name at cornerback. Jalen Ramsey was previously available, but they didn't go after him.

ESPN's Seth Walder thinks there's a smaller name who could make sense for the Raiders. He pitched a trade that would land Las Vegas Greg Newsome II and a 2027 seventh-round pick from the Cleveland Browns for a 2026 seventh-round pick.

"The Raiders spent the offseason stabilizing the organization, bringing in Geno Smith at quarterback and Pete Carroll at head coach," Walder wrote. "The defense has potential with a stout defensive line, but cornerback is the team's biggest weakness. Las Vegas, with over $90 million in 2026 cap space (second most of any team), can afford to bet on Newsome. If Carroll can get the most out of the 25-year-old cornerback, he'll elevate the Raiders' 2025 outlook and could stick around for future seasons."

Newsome Is a Former First-Round Pick

Newsome has started 42 games in four seasons with the Browns since being a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Last year, he only started in three games, as Cleveland is focusing on other cornerbacks.

Newsome may not be an All-Pro-level player, but he has a lot of experience and could be a low-risk option for the Raiders. He's a free agent after the season, so if he doesn't work out, the only thing Las Vegas loses is a sixth-round pick.
