The Miami Dolphins have had a lot of players come in and out of the building over the last decade, some ended up out of the league and others probably wish they got to hold on a little longer. One of those guys they probably wish they didn't have to let go was safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick was drafted by the Dolphins in 2018 and played 18 games for them before requesting a trade. It was never fully disclosed why he requested a trade but it is thought to be because of the losing culture in Miami at the time and because he did not like all the roles the Dolphins were asking him to play.
Well now the Dolphins organization is a lot different, they have had four winning seasons in the last five years the only non-winning season was this past year because of the injuries to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. They have made the playoffs twice in that time as well. The defense is also a bit more complete now, having multiple talented players in their secondary meaning they would only need Fitzpatrick to play his main role as the center fielder on defense.
Fitzpatrick had a solid season last year but it was slightly underwhelming for what he normally does. That along with the injuries that he was dealing with the year prior may make the Pittsburgh Steelers more open to trading Fitzpatrick than they would have a few years ago.
The five-time Pro Bowler had 96 tackles, one tackle for loss, four pass deflections, one interception, and one forced fumble. He is only 28 which means he is still in his prime, so finding a new home that is actually an old one may be the change he needs to go back to being one of the best safeties in the NFL.
There may be a few players Miami has on the roster that Pittsburgh could be interested in. One is Malik Washington, a receiver going into his second year. He had 26 catches for 223 yards last season in his rookie year. The Steelers already added DK Metcalf this offseason and may be looking for one more guy to give them some depth and speed.
The Steelers have one of the best defenses in the league and a lot of defensive back depth, with Fitzpatrick not being a huge part of that the past few years they most likely would not mind giving him away especially if that means they do not have to pay him and that they will get pieces in return. They can also use a pick to get another safety if needed.
The Dolphins will get the safety help they need badly, not to mention one that is already familiar with the area, and the Dolphins and Fitzpatrick will be able to do what they dreamed about when they drafted him in 2018.
The Dolphins will also most likely draft a safety as well, so having one of the best safeties of the past decade to teach and mentor whatever young safety they bring in wouldn't be such a bad idea either.
The Dolphins should call the Steelers and ask about Fitzpatrick, just like the Steelers did to them years ago. Having Fitzpatrick back in Miami could be just the familiar face the Dolphins need to make a real playoff run this upcoming season.
