Trainer hints Drew Brees could return next season in new workout video

While many took New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees' retirement as a foregone conclusion, it seems the future Hall of Famer might not be ready for a post-football career.

Fans last saw Brees as he and his family shared a moment with Tom Brady after the Saints' loss in the playoffs. Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported before the game that it would be Brees’ last in the NFL, with the decision seen as a practical guarantee.

Then, still without an announcement, head coach Sean Payton said a month ago that he expected Brees to announce his decision in a matter of weeks. While there wasn’t a specific indication of which route he would take, increased speculation pointed to retirement.

It now looks like a life of retirement is the last thing Brees wants to experience this spring.

Brees’ trainer posted a video on Friday showing the 42-year-old putting on an impressive showing with a weighted sled. After an injury-riddled season, Brees seemed to have no problem moving the weights at will. It even surprised those watching in person, with Brees’ trainer writing, “Not sure WHY he’s so cra-cra today, but something must be brewing…”

The Saints are facing significant financial problems this offseason due to the shrinking NFL salary cap. Brees helped the organization out by reworking his contract, agreeing to a restructure that many assumed would be followed by his official retirement.

Now there is speculation about a potential return. All of this comes as New Orleans evaluates its options at quarterback, determining whether to roll the dice on Jameis Winston, sign another free agent or give Taysom Hill a shot next season.

Everyone expected Brees to retire weeks ago, but this saga seems destined to play out even longer. If Brees ultimately decides to return, putting the team through this for the second consecutive season, NFL fans might start making some Brett Favre comparisons.
