There has been little concern or negativity emerging from the Baltimore Ravens training camp. Most veterans are performing up to expectations, and rookies are making the most of their first taste of NFL action. Both the offense and defense have had moments of dominance through the first two weeks of practice, but one critical issue is holding the offense back from reaching its potential in 2025.
Much of the cause for concern throughout the team’s recent practices has been the miscommunication up front. Specifically, players have fallen victim to countless pre-snap penalties, mainly false starts. The errors plagued Baltimore for the past couple of seasons, and it looks like they have persisted into training camp. With such high expectations, coaches and players need to resolve them fast.
In recent memory, the Ravens have struggled with penalties like delay of game, false start, and illegal formation. That continued in 2024, halting far too many drives and losing momentum in the process. They ranked near the top half in the NFL in each of those penalties. The coaching staff is working to improve in 2025, but the issues keep creeping up on Baltimore’s offense.
Every day out of camp, it sounds like more players are getting penalized for false starts. Starting tackles Ronnie Stanley and Roger Rosengarten got caught on Thursday, and guard Ben Cleveland has had a fair share across the first two weeks, and others have fallen victim, as well. However, Monken is making it tougher on his guys, which could be the cause of the increase in penalties. But, it could also benefit them heading into the regular season.
As the defense has been prioritizing taking the ball away more in 2025, the offense is focused on improving its communication. Offensive coordinator Todd Monken has mentioned the team has been trying out various cadences to keep the unit on its toes for what is to come in the regular season.
The offense will be immersed in harsh road environments, especially early in the year, so pouncing on the chance to prepare for the ultimate communication struggles that will occur should help Baltimore in the long run.
