Despite his impressive numbers and the fact that he led the Detroit Lions to their first division title since 1993, former Cal quarterback Jared Goff was not named to the Pro Bowl for the NFC.
A combination of voting by fans, coaches and players determined the Pro Bowl selections, and three quarterbacks were named in the AFC and three were named in the NFC.
The announcement of the Pro Bowl selections was made on Wednesday on NFL Network.
The Pro Bowl starter for the NFC is San Francisco's Brock Purdy and Dallas Dak Prescott was also named as an NFC Pro Bowl quarterback. No problem with those selections, but the third Pro Bowl choice for the NFC is the Rams' Matthew Stanford.
Are you kidding?
Goff ranks third in the NFL in passing yardage, fourth in touchdown passes and seventh in passer rating. He ranks ahead of Stafford in all three categories, and the Rams' record is 9-7 compared with the Lions' 11-5.
Interestingly enough Goff and Stafford were traded for each other in January 2021, and the Rams even threw in some draft picks in the deal.
The three AFC Pro Bowl quarterback selections are Miami's Tua Tagovailoa, Baltimore's Lamar Jackson and Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes. Goff has better numbers than Mahomes and is comparable to Tagovailoa and Jackson.
Several substitutes will be named to the Pro Bowl game based on players that are injured or are playing in the Super Bowl. Players in the Super Bowl do not participate in the Pro Bowl.
