Coming into the draft as a two-way star out of Colorado and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, expectations were high for Travis Hunter in Jacksonville.
But after the Jags traded up three spots to take him with the second overall pick in April's NFL Draft, there hasn't been a ton of return just yet from the player many have described a generational talent.
Through six games, Hunter has just 20 catches for 197 yards with no touchdowns. And he hasn't gotten a ton of work at cornerback either where a number of scouts believed he could be lockdown.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Hunter admitted that he's not producing the way he feels he can. But the former All-American isn't letting it get in the way of putting his best foot forward every time he steps on the field.
“It’s very important for me to be patient,” Hunter said (via NBC's ProFootballTalk). “I’ve just got to let the game come to me. The coaches are trying to dial up some things for me. I just got to continue to just work, and just have the guys trust me because I’m doing my job every time. I’ve just got to continue to do my job.”
Hunter certainly has the ability to be a playmaker in the Jaguars' offense and head coach Liam Coen says he and his staff plan to make Travis a much bigger part of their gameplans moving forward so they can take advantage of his speed and rare athleticism.
"Scheming him open is part of it, No. 1," Coen explained. "Our job as an offensive staff [is] to make sure we're putting him in the progression and putting him in the position to be No. 1 [option] a little bit more often in some ways."
"And then when he is the primary [option], we've got to throw and catch. We've got to make sure that we identify it, find him, be able to be at the right spot at the right time. So I think it's a combination of a lot of those things that ultimately can all be controlled."
We'll see how much headway Hunter and the Jags are able to make when they take on the Los Angeles Rams at Wembley Stadium this week. Hopefully we're able to get a breakout performance from the 22-year-old first-rounder across the pond.
