The Jaguars have made the call on two-way star Travis Hunter‘s initial designation in the Jacksonville lineup. He’s officially slotted as a starting wide receiver and a second-string cornerback.
Hunter was selected No. 2 overall by the Jaguars during April’s 2025 NFL Draft. He enters his rookie season as the reigning Heisman Trophy winner following his junior season at Colorado.

Tyson Campbell and Jourdan Lewis were tabbed as first-team cornerbacks during training camp. At this point, both CB2 spots are up for grabs with the language in the depth chart stating Travis Hunter or Jarrian Jones, and Montaric Brown or Levi Wallace.
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen spoke the Rich Eisen on Monday to discuss the plan to play on both offense and defense. However, it appears that Hunter is taking more toward the receiver position than he is in the defensive secondary.
“It’s happening,” Coen said of Hunter’s status of playing both sides of the ball. “Everybody in the building was on board with — how do we get the best out of Travis’s days? … Fast forward to now, where he has taken massive strides, specifically at the receiver position, of truly playing it right.
“How to run each route, how to attack, leverage. His ball skills and body control are extremely natural. You can’t really coach that.”
There’s still time for Hunter to earn the starting cornerback spot before the end of training camp. It will be interesting to see how much Hunter will play in the preseason, but given his second-string CB designation he could see more time on defense prior to Week 1.
Jacksonville will host the Pittsburgh Steelers for the opening week of the preseason on Aug. 9. It will serve as the first opportunity to see the incoming rookie during in-game NFL action.
During his college career, Hunter was a productive defender. During his Heisman season in 2024, Hunter totaled 35 tackles, 11 pass breakups, four interceptions and a forced fumble. Across three seasons in college, he has 24 total PBUs and nine interceptions.
Hunter’s offensive prowess is even more documented, and it appears as of now to be his primary side of the football to begin his rookie campaign. The Jaguars will host the Carolina Panthers to begin the regular season — and all eyes will be on the former Colorado star as he begins his NFL career.
