The NFL Draft is hours away. One of the top prospects, Travis Hunter Jr., will be able to have his father, Travis Hunter Sr., in attendance when his son is selected. A court has granted Hunter Sr. permission to travel to the NFL Draft on Thursday, April 24, 2025. Hunter Jr. will likely be drafted in the top five in the first draft.
When Hunter Jr. won the Heisman Trophy in December, he became visibly emotional when talking about his father, Travis Hunter Sr. During his Heisman speech, he acknowledged that his father could not attend the ceremony in New York City. A court granted Hunter Sr. permission to attend the NFL Draft and see his son selected. Hunter Sr., who lives in Boynton Beach, Florida, left the day before the draft and must return home Friday following the first round.
In late September 2024, Travis Hunter Sr., 39, received a 90-day sentence for his 2023 arrest on drug and firearm offenses. Nine days before the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York, a court freed Hunter Sr. from the Palm Beach County West Detention Center in Belle Glade but could not make it to the ceremony. He was put on probation for three years, requiring him to spend the first year under home confinement.
While at the Heisman ceremony, Hunter Jr.’s grandmother, Shirley Hunter, is excited to see her son attend her grandson’s draft selection. Shirley said, “That made me proud because he can go up there,” said Shirley, who lives in Boynton Beach. “I’d rather him be up there with his son than me. That’s his first son.”
Hunter’s family and friends will attend a Boynton Beach, Florida, draft party. Along with family, the youth football program Hunter played will also be there. Hunter started playing for the program at five years old and continued playing until he moved to Georgia with his mom before starting high school.
Many experts believe that Hunter Jr. is a candidate to be selected in the top two of the draft. The latest projections show that the Cleveland Browns will take Hunter at number two. Many believe that Cam Ward will be the first name selected by the Tennessee Titans. Hunter is the most dynamic player in this draft, and Cleveland can’t pass up on the opportunity to have such a prolific player.
Hunter Jr. won the Heisman Trophy in December, and during his speech, he dedicated a portion of it to his father, Hunter Sr. I want to say something to my father,” Travis Jr. said. “He’s not here and couldn’t make it, but I know you’re watching on TV. Dad, I love you. Look at your oldest son for everything you went through, man … Now. I did it for you, man.”
