Drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013, Travis Kelce has become one of the NFL’s greatest tight ends. The 36-year-old is an 11-time Pro Bowler and seven-time All-Pro, helping lead his team to three Super Bowl wins. He holds a collection of NFL records for tight ends, including the most single-season receiving yards with 1,416.

Travis is set to return for his 14th NFL season after a challenging 2025 campaign. He recorded 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns. The performance marked a decline from previous years, when he frequently topped 1,000 yards and 90 receptions. Despite the dip, he was still selected to the Pro Bowl, reflecting how highly he is held by fans and peers alike.

The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014 after finishing with a 6-11 record last year. Following their disappointing finish, the team has shifted its focus to the draft in pursuit of a bounceback campaign in 2026. As the Chiefs turn their attention to the draft, Kelce appears to already have a sense of how things will unfold.

In the latest episode of his “New Heights” podcast with his brother Jason Kelce, the Chiefs star revealed that the team’s front office keeps him informed about its draft plans. The Pro Bowl tight end initially avoided the question when Jason asked him about Kansas City’s draft strategy.

“I don't know,” Travis Kelce said. “We're going to find out.”

However, Jason Kelce accused him of withholding information, prompting Travis Kelce to quickly admit that he is, indeed, in the know.

“You’re lying,” the former Philadelphia Eagles center said. “I know. They always tell the players.”

This prompted Travis Kelce to respond, “Yep. They tell me everything.”

As someone who has spent over a decade in the NFL, Travis Kelce has developed a keen eye for evaluating talent. When asked what he looks for in a wide receiver, he said it’s not just about raw speed or athleticism—it’s about heart.

"You have to be a competitor. You have to show your love for the game, your competitiveness, how much you want to compete on every single play," the veteran tight end said. “That's one of the things I think needs to be higher than a lot of the other attributes.”

He then explained the technical details he uses to evaluate receivers. The 36-year-old described the ideal receiver as an “artist” who reads opposing coverage and understands the defense in front of him.

“When I'm looking at a receiver, I'm looking at, okay, how well does he know the defense that's in front of him?” Travis Kelce continued. “You can tell that by how fast his eyes get back to the ball, how fast he gets in and out of routes, how fast and how precise he gets to a certain point, depending on what route’s called… I'm looking at those kinds of things more than I'm really looking at how fast he is.”

When asked if he could truly evaluate these traits just by watching tape, the NFL star confidently responded, “Yeah, 100%.”

Chiefs Get Busy on Draft Night

The Chiefs made a significant trade up in the first round of this year's NFL draft on Thursday night. The team traded their No. 9 pick to the Cleveland Browns and moved up to No. 6 to select LSU Tigers cornerback Mansoor Delane. The Chiefs sent picks No. 9, 74 and 148 to Cleveland to complete the deal.

The rookie cornerback recorded 11 passes defended in 2025 for LSU, following three seasons at Virginia Tech. He also had six interceptions over the past two years. Delane joins a Chiefs defense that recently lost key players.

Two-time All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in March for a package of draft picks. One of those picks was No. 29, which Kansas City used on Thursday to select Clemson Tigers defensive tackle Peter Woods.

Chiefs cornerback Jaylen Watson also left in free agency and signed with the Rams. These strategic acquisitions show the Chiefs are working to rebuild their defense after losing several starters this offseason.
