The Kansas City Chiefs are headed to São Paulo, Brazil to open the 2025 NFL season on a special Friday night primetime clash against the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s a bold move by the league to kick off the year in a subtropical climate, and not everyone is thrilled about the decision.
On the most recent episode of his hit podcast, New Heights, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce spoke about the upcoming schedule and actually gave away the fact that the Chiefs were involved in the Brazilian affair. He also added his two cents, which weren't exactly favorable about having to play in such an environment.
“I’ll be there playing football in the f--king heat,” said Kelce in a conversation about it all with his brother Jason, who played center for the Philadelphia Eagles.
“There’s just something about getting closer to the equator that I don’t want to put on a football uniform doing that. I’ve been in Jacksonville in September and that’s f--king miserable.”
The Florida humidity has tormented plenty of players, especially at the start of an NFL season, which technically begins in the late summer. Kelce's extensive experience in the NFL, after 12 full seasons and 175 games, has likely yielded favorite places to play. EverBank Stadium doesn't sound like one of them.
The good news for the Chiefs is that a muggier climate doesn't seem to slow down Kelce at all. Despite the miserable weather, the Jaguars haven’t exactly found a way to stop him.
In six games against the Jags, Kelce has racked up 451 receiving yards, 37 catches, and 4 touchdowns. That includes a historic playoff outing in January 2023 when he caught 14 passes on 16 targets for 98 yards and 2 scores, setting a postseason record for receptions by a tight end in a single game.
The man might hate playing near the equator, but the numbers say Kelce thrives in it. Come Week 1 in São Paulo, the sweat will be real, but Kelce's production should be just as hot.
