Trending Kirk Cousins to Atlanta Falcons Report Debunked by Cited Source; ‘Never, ever, said the Falcons will sign Cousins’

On Thursday, recent reports made their round on Twitter (also known as X) suggesting the Atlanta Falcons will ink free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins to a lucrative deal, making him one of the highest-paid players in football. The account MLFootball, with over 157 thousand followers, tweeted the report, citing Atlanta news director Zach Klein. However, Klein immediately called out the “credentialed media outlet” for misrepresenting him and the Falcon’s intentions.

Zach Klein: Shuts Down Reports of Atlanta Falcons Signing Kirk Cousins

Klein took to his own Twitter account to refute MLFootball’s report of quarterback Kirk Cousins to the Atlanta Falcons, which cited him as the primary source of information. He firmly stated, “Never…..ever…. said the Falcons “will” sign Cousins. Just said the buzz around the combine… league scouts and agents and front office execs believe the Falcons’ #1 choice at QB is Cousins. Haven’t spoken with anyone associated with the Falcons. That’s it.”

Over the years, MLFootball has received criticism for falsely representing reporters’ words and initial assertions. Klein is not the first to call out the popular Twitter account, and certainly won’t be the last. However, the Atlanta-based reporter emphasized that front-office execs believe the Falcons have Cousins as their top choice to play quarterback for them next season.

Cousins suffered a brutal Achilles tear last season, playing in just over seven games for the Minnesota Vikings. He finished the 2023 season with 2,331 passing yards and 18 touchdowns against five picks while completing nearly 70% of his passes. Cousins posted well-rounded numbers during his six-year stint with the Vikings, tallying 171 touchdowns to 55 picks and a 101.2 quarterback rating.

Atlanta Falcons: Desperate for Quarterback Help

Atlanta will likely have new faces in the quarterback room, even if they don’t ink Kirk Cousins into a long-term deal. The Falcons finished last season 22nd or worse in passing yards, touchdowns, and most picks thrown. Second-year gunslinger Desmond Ridder started the season as the QB1 but threw just 12 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. Meanwhile, backup Taylor Heinicke threw five touchdowns against four picks.

Whoever Atlanta brings in to play quarterback will have a war chest of receiving options. The Falcons house star running back Bijan Robinson , former first-round pick and tight end Kyle Pitts, and the 8th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Drake London
