On Monday, the news emerged that Oregon assistant head coach/running back coach Ra’Shaad Samples was charged with DUII and reckless driving. This occurred after an incident in April and was first reported by Ryan Clarke of The Oregonian/Oregonlive.com.

DUII is a term that is primarily used in the state of Oregon and stands for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants. It is similar to DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or DWI (Driving While Impaired/Intoxicated). The specific “Intoxicants” wording clarifies that the offense applies to impairment by alcohol, cannabis, prescription drugs, or controlled substances.

A Eugene police officer cited Samples in lieu of custody on April 12 at 2:02 a.m. after he allegedly backed his Ford F-150 into a parked car in downtown Eugene. According to Ryan Clarke, the responding officer reported that Samples appeared visibly impaired by alcohol. Damage was reported to both vehicles, though it is unclear whether anyone was inside the parked vehicle at the time of the crash.

Samples is scheduled to appear in court on July 20th. DUII and reckless driving are both Class A misdemeanors in Oregon, the most serious level of misdemeanor offense, carrying a maximum sentence of up to 364 days in jail.

Samples arrived in Oregon prior to the 2024 season. He began his coaching career in 2016 as a student assistant at Houston, before making stops at Texas, SMU, Arizona State and in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams.

Prior to coaching, he was a four-star wide receiver who played at Oklahoma State and then Houston. However, concussions resulted in his medical retirement.

Oregon has not made a public statement regarding Samples’ charges.
