Trent McDuffie Changes Everything for the Rams

The Kansas City Chiefs are sending their star cornerback, Trent McDuffie, to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Chiefs receive the 2026 29th overall pick, the 2026 fifth-round pick, the 2026 sixth-round pick, and the 2027 third-round pick in exchange for the top defensive back.

Trent McDuffie Changes Everything for the Rams

McDuffie is a Los Angeles native who attended St. John Bosco for high school. The Rams were a clear potential trade destination for McDuffie.

“If I could play for another team, I’d probably want to play close to my family,” McDuffie said during his T22 McDuffie Foundation Event in 2025. “So, that’ll probably be the LA Rams, so that my family can come see every single game.”

The trade signals a step in the right direction for the Rams and can only be described as a touchdown. The Rams’ most needed improvement this offseason is in the cornerback room. The last time the franchise had a number one corner was in 2022 with Jalen Ramsey who helped them win a championship.

How Good is McDuffie?

The addition of McDuffie guarantees a better pass defense for next season. McDuffie was ranked 11th overall by Pro Football Focus (PFF) among qualifying cornerbacks. He has been one of the best corners in the game, since entering the league as the 21st overall pick in the 2022 draft out of the University Washington.

McDuffie now reunites with Jimmy Lake, who was the University of Washington’s defensive coordinator and head coach from 2018-2021. Lake currently serves as the Rams’ pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach.

In 2023, McDuffie had a breakout year with an 84.8 PFF grade which was fourth among qualifying corners. In 2024, he ranked third among qualifying corners and had an overall PFF grade of 83.1. His career coverage is graded at an 89.4 which ranks him top five in the league.

McDuffie is also in his last contract year as the Chiefs exercised their club option before trading him. As an unrestricted free agent in 2027, McDuffie will likely be better than advertised in a contract year. Even though he had a down year last season, a new team and a new opportunity could benefit him.

Offseason Freedom

This trade also gives the Rams more freedom in the draft. Los Angeles still has the 13th pick in this year’s draft, which they can use to select another position other than corner. General manger Les Snead has done a great job of building the roster through the draft since 2021. The Rams have made no notable trades since 2021, focusing instead on developing their players.

The roster still has some holes in certain areas like special teams and offensive line. The retirement of longtime Ram and 11-year veteran, Rob Havenstein, now adds to the small list of needs for the team. The Rams also suffered from one of the worst special teams units in the league this season, ranked 26th overall by Pro Football Focus (PFF). Drafting or signing a returner could greatly improve their chances of winning the Super Bowl.

The Rams have over $40 million in cap space this offseason and can spend more freely now that they have acquired McDuffie. Four of their cornerbacks are on the free agency market this offseason but they can rebuild the unit especially starting with their new number one corner.

“Our macro philosophy is, if we can use free agency to not be desperate in the draft, we more than likely will be better drafters,” Snead said on addressing positional needs in free agency.
