Trev Alberts Takes the Reins as Texas A&M Director of Athletics
USA Today Sports

Texas A&M President Mark A. Welsh III has appointed Trev Alberts as the new director of athletics, marking a significant milestone for the Aggies’ athletic program. Alberts, a former standout football player at the University of Nebraska and a seasoned athletic director, brings over 15 years of experience and a proven track record of success to his new role.

A Legacy of Leadership and Excellence

A legacy of leadership and excellence marks Alberts’ journey to the helm of Texas A&M Athletics. As an All-American football player at the University of Nebraska, Alberts distinguished himself as one of the nation’s top college linebackers, earning accolades such as Nebraska’s first Butkus Award winner and multiple All-American honors. His talent and dedication led to his selection as the fifth overall pick in the 1994 NFL draft, where he played for the Indianapolis Colts before injuries prompted his retirement.

Following his playing career, Alberts seamlessly transitioned to a successful broadcasting career, serving as an analyst for ESPN’s College GameDay. However, his passion for collegiate athletics eventually drew him back to the field, where he embarked on a new chapter as an athletic director.

A Decade and a Half of Athletic Director Experience

Alberts’ tenure as an athletic director began at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he served for 12 years. During his time at Nebraska at Omaha, Alberts played a pivotal role in the transition of the athletic program from Division II to Division I, overseeing significant upgrades to athletic facilities and fostering a culture of excellence both on and off the field.

In 2021, Alberts returned to his alma mater, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as the athletic director. Under his leadership, Nebraska athletics experienced remarkable growth and success, with achievements ranging from top finishes in NCAA sports to record-high graduation rates among student-athletes.

Transition and Gratitude

While Alberts looks forward to his new role at Texas A&M, he acknowledged the bittersweet nature of leaving his beloved alma mater, the University of Nebraska. “I truly want to express my gratitude to the University of Nebraska — the school and its fans have been immensely important to me,” Alberts said.

Warm Welcome and Alberts’ Vision

Interim Athletic Director R.C. Slocum extended a warm welcome to Alberts and his family, expressing excitement about the future of Texas A&M Athletics under Alberts’ leadership. “I look forward to seeing where Trev takes the A&M program,” Slocum remarked.

Alberts expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to lead Texas A&M Athletics into the future. “There has never been a more consequential time in history for higher education and the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics,” Alberts stated. He emphasized his commitment to empowering student-athletes and helping Texas A&M achieve unprecedented success both on and off the field.

A Bright Future Ahead

As Alberts prepares to embark on this new chapter, he brings with him a wealth of experience, a passion for collegiate athletics, and a commitment to excellence. With his leadership at the helm, Texas A&M Athletics is poised for a bright and successful future, both on the fields, tracks, and courts and in the lives of the student-athletes it serves.
