Trevon Diggs Makes Request to Dallas Cowboys After 4 Games Played

Prior to this season, the last time Trevon Diggs came off the bench for the Dallas Cowboys was during his rookie campaign in 2020. This was in his first game back following a four-week spell in injured reserve.

This season, Diggs has already come off the bench twice in four games. In Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, the All-Pro cornerback may have been eased in by the Cowboys after a season-ending knee injury in 2024.

However, last Sunday’s benching against the Green Bay Packers was different. By his own admission, Diggs revealed that head coach Brian Schottenheimer benched him in Week 4 because of an undisclosed off-the-field issue.

Diggs accepted the punishment and seemed intent on moving on quickly from the incident. He is now set to return to the starting lineup for Sunday’s matchup against the New York Jets.

Apart from the off-field issue, Diggs' level of play may have also been a reason behind Schottenheimer’s decision to have the CB come off the bench against Green Bay. After the game, the first-year head coach said that he’s been “a little tough” on Diggs “in terms of the consistency.”

Schottenheimer enjoyed Diggs’ performance against the Packers, though, after the two-time Pro Bowler logged four solo tackles, including a crucial tackle for loss in overtime.

For his part, however, Diggs admitted that he’s still getting used to defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus’ zone-heavy schemes. In this light, the Cowboys star has made a request to his new DC.

“Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs, who has made his bones in this league as man corner, has asked DC Matt Eberflus to play more man coverage. Until then he said he will have get comfortable being uncomfortable as a zone cornerback,” wrote Cowboys veteran reporter Clarence Hill Jr on X.

Dallas’ cornerbacks have yet to log any interceptions after four games played, which is not something that is lost on Diggs.

“It’s surprising,” Diggs said, via Pro Football Talk. “It’s not like we don’t have talent. We got to be in position. And I feel like once again positioned to do it, . . . but it’s just all about being in position to make the plays.”

Be that as it may, Diggs is still willing to adapt to Eberflus’ system even though it does not play to his strengths as an elite one-on-one defensive player.

“I have to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” Diggs said. “It’s not about what I want.”

Whether or not Eberflus listens to Diggs’ request now remains to be seen.
