Trevon Diggs Won’t Be a Dallas Cowboy in 2026

The Dallas Cowboys once revered Trevon Diggs as their premier cornerback. Under the direction of Dan Quinn, he was a ballhawk and a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. Since Quinn left, Diggs regressed in a major way. Now he’s become nothing less than a headache for the franchise, and at times for himself.

A Quarterback’s Dream

According to a report by CBS Sports, in the six games before being concussed in 2025, Diggs gifted quarterbacks a whopping 148.7 passer rating when targeted. In the lone game since being cleared to return it was more of the same. He was targeted five times by Justin Herbert and allowed five catches for 60 yards—one of which was a 25-yard dart to Ladd McConkey for a touchdown. Dallas was in a cover 2 and the safety didn’t help over the top. But Diggs still seemed lost, letting up on his man coverage and giving McConkey the easy score.

Mystery Concussion Explained

According to Jane Slater, Diggs was installing a TV, and it fell on his head. Embarrassing? Yes. Worth the closely guarded secret he specifically kept from the media? Hardly. A little self-effacing humor and he could have avoided all the ridicule. It’s understandable why he supposedly wants to stay in Dallas though, that poolside pole mounted TV just wouldn’t have been worth all the hassle otherwise.

An Easy Way Out

Diggs is currently playing under a five-year, $97 million contract extension he signed in 2023. He’s the 11th highest paid cornerback in the league and playing nowhere near that level of pay. If the Cowboys cut or trade him in 2026 before June 1st, it’s a $5.8 million hit in dead money, with a cap savings of $12.5 million. If it’s a post June 1st trade/cut however, it’s merely a $2.9 million dead cap hit with a saving of $15.5 million. Obviously, the latter is the far better option, unless of course they’re in a pickle to sign the likes of George Pickens.
