It's a critical season for Trevor Lawrence, with the former Clemson Tigers quarterback attempting to guide the Jacksonville Jaguars back to the playoffs. The team reached the postseason in just his second NFL season, but they haven't been back since.
Jaguars' minicamp is allowing Lawrence to get back to throwing after months away from it, and to familiarize himself with new personnel. Several rookies joined the roster via the NFL Draft and free agent signings, including talented rookie Travis Hunter.
The team made a big move to take Hunter, trading up to draft the dual-threat Colorado Buffaloes star second overall. With minicamp underway, Lawrence and others are seeing their star rookie in action.
First impressions are everything. So far, the Jaguars quarterback likes what he sees from watching Hunter on the field.
"He has a lot of juice. He can run all day, has a lot of energy. I love it, good energy. He is always dapping guys up, just bringing juice every day. High motor, he can just go," Lawrence told reporters at minicamp, per ESPN.
Lawrence revealed he was surprised by Hunter's explosiveness when it came to making cuts, and fans are hoping to see more of the rookie's abilities on both sides of the ball.
Hunter, 22, spent a season with Jackson State before playing two more seasons under legendary two-way sports star Deion Sanders at Colorado, where he excelled on offense and defense.
In his 2024 college season, Hunter tallied 96 receptions and a team-leading 1,258 yards to go with 15 touchdowns for the 9-4 Buffaloes.
As a cornerback, he also did impressive things during his collegiate career, racking up 58 solo, 23 assisted, and 80 combined tackles along with nine interceptions, including one for a touchdown. His four interceptions for Colorado in 2024 also led the team.
Hunter's getting to go through the motions with the Jags on both sides of the ball at minicamp, as the team continues to evaluate his best fit for the upcoming season.
“He's been impressive to watch, and we have been able to connect a couple of times. He is only going to keep getting better and better,” Lawrence, said praising the rookie.
The Jags signal caller called it “another world” for a player to be drafted that high and carry big expectations as a cornerback and receiver. However, Lawrence indicated he’ll be spending time with the rookie over the summer to work on timing and helping him adjust to the team’s system.
"I have no concerns about him. I'm really excited just to see him continue to get better. He is a special player on both sides of the ball," the Jaguars QB said.
